If you have the old style British passport then you will not be eligible to travel to the United States under the visa waiver program (vwp).
To qualify under the vwp your passport must be machine readable i.e have two lines of letters, numbers and '>>>>>' printed on the bottom of your personal information.
If your passport was issued, renewed or extended between October 26, 2005 and October 25, 2006 it must contain a digital photograph, not the laminated one's that they use to have.
If the passport was issued, renewed or extended on or after October 26, 2006, it must be also include an integrated circuit chip capable of storing the biographic information from the data page, a digitized photograph and other biometric information.
If your passport does not meet these requirements then you will have to apply for a tourist (B-2) visa at the American Embassy in London (see website below).
http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/niv/b2.html
Personally I would pay for it to be renewed.

What do you mean old?
If the passport was issued before 26th October 2006, US immigration will accept a machine readable passport for entry under the Visa Waiver Program (those with >>>> at the bottom but without a chip).
If the passport was issued on or after 26th October 2006, US immigration will only accept a biometric passport (those with >>>> at the bottom and with a chip)..

I think you can go without a visa if your passport has the two lines with various codes on it on the bottom of the page which has your personal details.
Try the following for more information:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html
Be sure to be 100% certain before you go!

in the experience that your brother has a passport, then get one the comparable way HE have been given one. you will desire a kind (you will get it from the submit-place of work), a image, and your start-certificates. stick to all of the learning on the kind, get all of the failings signed that it asks you to sign, then deliver away the kind. in case you reside in Northern eire, you reside in Britain, so that's a British Passport.

They WILL NOT let you go to the US if you don't have the new designed passport, I know for a fact... Renew your passport
Doesn't matter if it's valid or not, they won't let you
And no, you don't need a visa to go to the US from the UK
