it depends on what you're wanting to add to your repertoire. i really hate to sound like a typical mma guy, but muay thai will add to your hand skills and add power to your kicking skills. also, jiu jitsu will add grappling, which is a must (though it does NOT necessarily have to be your main focus-many will tell you that) for any well rounded fighter. the full contact of these arts/sports will give you much benefit as well. if its self defense you want, TKD is usually supplemented by hapkido, a related korean art but is suggest looking into krav maga as well. as a general rule, a martial artist should look to EVERY style to see what they can benefit from it, even if its only the exposure itself. ps- there are alot of boisterous assholes on forums like this, don't be manipulated. the pursuit of martial arts is a personal journey and we must all find our own path. there is no monopoly on the truth, and no style has all the answers. good luck, i hope this helps.

I've watched the Tae Kwon Do championships in the last Olympics and the dudes were very impressive! More than I expected. I've always looked down at TKD until then. I excelled at amature boxing and was a Golden Gloves National champ. TKD or even Monkey TKD (in my opinion) is only what the participant makes of it.

Kempo would keep you in the familiar style, but pretty much anything you learn in Kempo would be illegal to use in TKD matches. You'd have to learn how to focus your strikes to less vital areas for Kempo to really be that effective.
Shoot fighting would be more of a step up from TKD than just a compliment. But then again, that can be your edge. Again, a lot of technique learned in shoot fighting would be illegal in a TKD match.
I personally never got in to Judo. But my cousin who was really in to TKD ended up taking a couple years of Judo as well. I'm not sure how well them complimented one another, but he definitely could fight. The wrestling part could be a different edge possibly too.
Jiu Jitsu would probably be a nice compliment. Enough said there.

honestly man anything will be better than tkd for you to move on too. try jiu jitsu for some ground game or judo. i am a 2nd degree black belt in tkd and i will admit now that i do mma, tkd is all for show and flashy. move onto something different, but it all depends on what u like.

Why do people have a beef with TKD? Perhaps try judo - the skills are more akin to wrestling so it would be a nice addition to your TKD skills.

Hapkido or Wrestling. Tae Kwon Do is about punching and kicking. Hapkido is about throwing, tossing, and more in depth self defense. Wrestling is grappling, throwing, and tossing. Put it together and you can be dangerous.

Krav Maga is very close combat, meaning you can fight somebody in a bus, plane, car or other tight space.

Aikido is another close combat specializing mostly in locks such as arm twists, wrist twists and choke holds. Steven Segal made this style famous.

Let me just say this. Over the years I have met several Marines and former Marines. Any trained Marine can kick all of your a__es, I don't give a f__k what you studied or what bulls__t color belt you wear. So to answer your question I would say it makes no difference, you still won't be able to take care of yourself 100%.
