I breed cockateils and lovebirds as a hobby and sell them to a local pet store. they r handfed, The owner, has not been able to sell the lovebirds as much as the cockateils, and I dont know why. They r really cute, he says people r scared of thier big beaks.

i always liked lovebirds quite a lot, and hand raised them just as you do....

i've found that lovebirds need to be handled a lot, in order to keep them "tame" and they can also have an attitude! but they are cute nonetheless!

have you tried posting little ads on bulletin boards at stores, or putting an ad in the paper for hand fed baby lovebirds? maybe you could sell them yourself?

You could even design a cute little ad using the computer and a graphic of the lovebirds? A picture might really help....

Maybe the local vet's office would let you put up an ad too?

I hope you'll sell the little guys! take care

Lovebirds just aren't as popular as cockatiels. Most people recognize cockatiels almost as well as budgies, so they are more likely to feel comfortable buying them. Lovebirds are also often sold for more money than cockatiels. They also require more frequent interaction to stay tame. If the store buys your lovebirds and cockatiels, but doesn't make much effort to interact with and socialize the birds once they get them, the cockatiels will probably stay tame for a longer period of time, while the lovebirds will start to get nippy and antisocial.

I would suggest holding off on breeding your lovebirds until you know the store needs more, and then breed them in smaller numbers than your cockatiels. That way you won't end up with a surplus of unwanted lovebirds on your hands.

umm I think the store owner is pulling your leg.

But honestly lovies are not as well known as tiels so they wont sell as well. Sometimes they dont sell at all that is probably what is happening at this point.

We go thru cycles down here as well .... I was told by a local breeder when I started that I better be prepared to give a home to every baby I had. We had several clutches of lovies over 3 years all sweet wonderful handfed babies. Sometimes it would take up to 6 months to sell them all. I finally stopped breeding them since the market for them got so slow. I didnt want to have babies and no homes!!!

Cockatiels are common birds, and people feel comfortable purchasing them. Many people are still unknowledgable of Lovebirds, and therefore do not purchase them. Why not put a 'hold' on breeding Lovebirds, until the sales begin again?

Depending on how they are selling the lovebirds!! Are they selling them in pairs or by singles? You need to stop sellling them to the pet store period.

Personally Pet stores sell love birds commonly in pairs. Which means they sell siblings as pairs which then get sold and mated. Then people wonder why love birds are nasty? They are never told they are siblings and the genetics are to closely related and WE wonder why splayed legs are happening way to often!! It's also starting to happen with the parakeets too now.

The rescues are filling up left and right, open your eyes and stop contributing to it. Breeding was for genetic blood lines, not for money.

I love lovebirds but pet store tend to be pricey specially the hand fed once. I end up purchasing from a swapmeet. Why not sell them yourselves instead of selling to a pet store?
