It could be "cradle cap" or seborrheac dermatitis (spelling.) It usually happens with babies, but can happen to young children. The oil glands are just going overboard. It's harmless, but you might want to take a look at some pics online to compare. You can clear it up with special shampoos. I think dandruff shampoos may be helpful.

I'm wondering if the scabs are actual blood scabs or if it's something more flat, widespread, and yellowish in color. If it's the latter, then it might just be "cradle cap" from not rinsing his hair thoroughly after shampooing. I hope it's just that, because otherwise that sounds a bit scary. Definitely take him to the doctor if it's blood scabs. Do they look like bug bites at all? I wish you could post more info.
If it ends up being about the rinsing, you use a paste of baking soda and a little bit of water. Let it sit in the hair for a couple minutes, scrub with your fingers like a good shampooing, and then rinse thoroughly.
Good luck.

You're kidding, right? An eight year old with cradle cap?
Try checking for head lice. That's how I found out my daughter had them. What a shock!. No idea where she could have got them and she was going on sleep-overs and everything. I made an appointment to take her in (they were at the base of her hairline at the back of her head, poor kid), then took a closer look! I cancelled the doctor's appt and went to the pharmacist. Did I ever feel sorry for her. Better check everyone in the family too. Let everyone he's come into contact with know, or you will have an epidemic on your hands. Call the school nurse as well.

Sounds like Psoriasis to me .. I have it on my scalp and every now and then end up with scabs iching and burning, flakey and dry.. I heard caster oil is good for it .... I use T-Gel shampoo but it doesn't seem to be helping me much....
If that isn't it check for bugs might be bites or possibly severe cradle cap and if that's the case oil is good for all those things!

It might be "impetigo". Simple antibiotics will help. It's best to not let your child scratch it because it may worsen. I would also be very careful because it might be spreadable to other people.
