If you are in pretty good shape and play sports you should be able to run more than one mile.
Try to run for 15 to 20 minutes

Run easy so that you can talk, if you need to walk then walk until you feel like running again.

Do this for 3 weeks, by then you should be able to run the whole time, and you can increase the time if you wish.

Increase by about 25% every 3 or 4 weeks.
When you run stay relaxed and breath deep, full breaths don't gasp or pant, and run slow enough that you can talk while running.

YOUR PLAN IS BETTER THAN THE ANSWERS YOU GOT SO FAR !!! Injury is your biggest risk right now. So you want to start slow and easy. Injuring yourself now won't help a bit in the final minutes of a match.

1. Start at half-mile per day for the first week. Run at conversational pace.

2. If you are comfortable with that distance, you can increase your distance by 10%.

3. Always rest 1 day a week.

Good Luck

I'd say a mile is a good distance to start at. If you get done and your not tired and you can keep running farther, then keep running until you are tired. Increase you distance and time whenever you get done with your current distance and aren't tired anymore for about a week. If you haven't been tired when you finished for that week then up the distance. I did this and it took me about a month to get up to running 3 miles every other day.

I usually just run until I dont want to and then stroll back home.

Sometimes I have ran because people were chasing me, I usually run faster when ANGRY people are chasing me!
