we can't really stop someone from sleepwalking. unless she sees a specialist then MAYBE some medication will help otherwise all you can do is safe proof the house. my son is 4 and sleep walks. it runs in my family and if your friend sleeps walks chances are there's someone in her family (cousins, aunts, uncles. someone) who has done it themselves.
we had to put certain types of locks on our windows so he wouldn't open them and climb out. some say (even some doctors) turn the door knob around and lock them in their room but in case of a fire we have never done that. he can unlock doors in his sleep, climb down from his top bunk (we had to take that down after he fell twice, and then climb over a baby gate and wonder through the house, he has also went to the restroom as well and the sound of him peeing bless his heart woke him up and sent him into hysterics. we have had to put a chain lock up at the top of the door that he can't reach and doesn't know how to undo to make sure he doesn't get out of the house without us knowing.
if you wake them up in their sleep you could risk getting seriously hurt and confusing them. i have woke my son up twice and i'll never do it again. we have plugged up a baby monitor to tell when and if he gets up and sleep walks. one of us will get up and watch him to make sure he doesn't get hurt. and occassionally we will usher him very gently back to his bed without waking him. or maybe guide him to the couch. we can carry on a conversation with him in his sleep as well sometimes.
all you can do if proof everything. drawers, cabinets, doors for your friends safety. my cousin and uncle have climbed out of windows and walked down the street in their sleep when they were younger. my aunt would wake up in her closet. another turned on a stove. etc. you just have to monitor them in their sleep that's really all you can do.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

When she walks in her sleep and you are awake gently take her hand and lead her back to the bed. If you have to speak to her use a soft gentle voice. Cover her and watch her for about 5 minutes then go back to sleep. She needs medication to stop her sleep walking.

Umm why would you be getting in trouble if someone is sleep walking.
First..NEVER wake the person up as it can become a worse situation. Just try to talk to the person and guide them back to their bed. If it's becoming a nightly occurance, perhaps being seen to would be a good thing to do to find out why this is happening*

I am a sleep expert. I have a lot of experience sleeping. In fact, I could be a professional sleeper. If I were trying to prevent sleepwalking in a patient, probably not mine, of course, but a patient nonetheless, I would first string a wire 9 inches off the ground across the door frame, after the patient went to sleep. Once the patient was asleep, and before the walking sleep, I would turn off the power at the breaker box, just in case she miraculously turns on a light, for like always when she takes a slumberhike. Likely story that is.
Of course, I would have a video camera for my own amusement, but when she sleepwalks, I like to have moved the furniture into odd places and after she falls down the stairs, rush her back to bed, so I can put everything back into its proper place, and when she awakens, ask her how she slept, as thought nothing happened.

Lock the door so she can't go outside and keep her safe. There is really nothing you can do. In time it should stop.
