Hey everyone, I would first of all like to commend all the soldiers fighting for our freedom, weather it be stateside or overseas. I recently had a long distance friend who I haven't seen in a few years totally lie about being in Iraq via Army reserves for two years. Things he was saying weren't adding up, and it was confirmed he wasn't there through searches and a member of his family tonight. I am still in a state of shock about this, and don't even know what to say to him. This has actually inspired me to join (after I have been debating it for a few years) and I couldn't be happier. God bless America, and let's support our troops!!!!!

Thanks for all your answers:) This is a friend that I've been in touch with now for over a year. We were very close for a few years, but lost touch when I went off to college (distance) We were coming close to being roommates, so that's why I was surprised that he would lie about that. If anyone doesn't talk about the war around family (on the phone) you know something's fishy lol. I appreciate all your input.

First of all, we could use some more good brothers and sisters of the services.

But I have to question your motive for joining, are you doing it out of spite for your friend? Four or five years from now, when things don't end up being all you thought it would be (it'll happen) will you look back on the reason you joined as inspiration to keep going? If not, you'll end up just as you were before you joined.

Give it some thought, and if there's more to your story than you've posted then I apologize.

All I have to say is are you completely sure? You are most likely correct but....... civilian searches usually don't mean squat. Family? Shoot, for years my family knew I was in but I never shared the details as I have an odd and opinionated family. Plus I did not want to talk about it as being home was the key. They did not need to know and would not understand. It was not until years later that I finally (an old vet read my uniform) outed me and I finally told the family what I had gone through and was.

As I said you are probably right but just consider. And by the way good for you for joining. Even if you just do one tour it will enhance your life in so many ways. It will also be something that you will take pride in until the end of your days.

That has been happening for each conflict that we've ever fought in. you purely now get to pay attention approximately it. The extra suitable side will constantly have the few that funds in on the situation. purely have faith a million/2 of what you spot and none of what you pay attention. from now on rediculus rumors you go with to talk.

There are a lot of "wanna be's" out there, they feel the need to get attention from the public.

Some never served in the military, and some who did serve in the military have upgraded their medal awards and military history even politicians.

Hence, the newly enacted Stolen Valor Act.Anybody falsely claiming such should be reported to the FBI.

It is not only from the Iraq war, but from previous wars these posers also feel the need to fit in along with true veterans.

Thank you for volunteering to serve and I'm sure you'll be an asset to whatever organization you join.

The web site listed below is a catalog of all the known phonies and wannabees at large today. The people you'll find listed there have make claim to military service they haven't performed or to military honors they haven't earned.

The Stolen Honors Act has made it a federal offense to claim to have been awarded any decoration for valor when it fact you haven't been. It is also a federal offense to claim to hold rank or to have served if it is not true. If you do know of any phonies or a wannabees out there, please contact your local authorities. Many of them may be working a confident scam and collecting monies from unsuspecting donators for nonexistence causes.

Real veterans generally do not tell 'War Stories' out of school, if somebody is telling you about their role in this battle or that battle, they are most likely blowing smoke up your @$$....

What an idiot... why would ANYONE lie about something like that?

HOOAH! Join girl... serve your country... I already gained respect for you just because you say you want to join.

I am joining in 2008. I want to become a Medic in the Army. The only thing holding me back is my weight, but as soon as I get that out of the way and pass the ASVAB... I'll be good to go.

Good luck and Godspeed!

Sounds like your long distance friend wanted to say something big to impress you for whatever reason. If you haven't heard from your friend in a few years, why are you getting so dramatic in the fact he lied to you? You don't have to be so dramatic. Just accept the fact he lied to you and let it be. Doesn't mean you have to stay in contact with him either. Just drop it and go on with your life as you did before.

I'm sorry, but what was your question?

Yes, I think you'll find your friend isn't alone. People lying about their military service (if they had any to begin with) are everywhere. It's all too common in societies where veterans are revered.
