the medicine is amitiza and the doc didnt bother to check for signs of an obstruction and it says do not take it if you have an obstruction so i was wondering if anyone has any idea what could happen if i was to have an obstruction and take this

First of all, Amitiza works by activating chloride channels to increase fluid secretion in the intestine, thereby increasing the passage of stool. In normal conditions, it is supposed to relieve constipation and there will be an increase passage of watery excretions.

With the presence of a bowel obstruction (which causes a partial or complete blockage in the intestines preventing gas, fluids, or solids from moving through the intestines normally), the watery or semi-watery fecal materials will be blocked or partially blocked.

As the consequences, there could be an increased nausea and vomiting,extensive abdominal distention or bloating, increased abdominal pain or colics, and possibly fecal vomiting depending on the level of the obstruction. Occasional seeping diarrhea could occur if the intestinal blockage is partial. Bowel ischemia or perforation can happen if the distention is prolonged.

In severe situations, there could be an imposed danger of aspiration of vomitus and some difficulty of breathing due to an increased pressure on the diaphragm.

If the person takes any medication as per the advice of Doctor nothing more needed to be done. The doctor will advise suitably.

If he wants to avoid chronic constipation by natural treatments then ask him to follow as below-

Eat more fruit and vegetables. These high fiber foods bulk up stool making it easier to pass.
1. Drink lots of fluids (water is best), this helps to make stool softer.
2. Get adequate sleep
3. Eat meals at regular times. Breakfast is the most important.
4. Exercise regularly. Do exercises which can increase the tone of lower abdominal and pelvic muscles.
5. Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement because you are too busy.
6. Allow time (15 min. at least) after breakfast to sit on the toilet. Relax and don't strain.
7. Avoid medications that are constipating if at all possible. Calcium, iron and narcotic analgeseics are just a few of these.
8. Do not take harsh laxatives unless directed by a doctor.
9. Add additional bulk to the diet with bran.
10. Cut back on dairy foods such as cheese, and on eggs which can be constipating.
11. Practice relaxation techniques. Stress can cause constipation.
12. Consider adding more fiber to your diet when traveling. Changes in routine can cause constipation.
Additional Tips:
1. If constipation is a new problem and persists, you should follow-up with your doctor.
2. If constipation is accompanied by abdominal pain or blood in the stool you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
3. If you alter between diarrhea and constipation you should see a doctor and be evaluated.-

Actually I believe it's bad to take it if you have a history of bowel obstructions. If you don't then I wouldn't be too worried about it. This too shall pass.

Do not take Amitiza if you:
* Have a history of bowel obstruction.
* Are pregnant, unless, after discussion with your doctor,
the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
* Have severe diarrhea.
* Are allergic to Amitiza or any of its ingredients.

it's up to what stage of obstruction. this condition is diagnosed by an MD. you cannot assume you have an obstruction just by having symptoms of constipation. Seek medical attention if needed to avoid further complications.

Lots of pain, and bloating, since the s##t isn't going anywhere. Barring that, you should have a good toilet session fairly soon. What you need is more fiber in your diet, more good old fashioned water , and see if you can't lower your stress as well. Get more exercise while you are at it. Exercise will help get what you eat out of your digestive system a lot faster.
