it seems stupid to buy any other personal aircraft than a lancair if the prices on lancair.com are true, a new 172 costs like $400000 and doesnt perform nearly as well. so are these prices real and what would it cost to have them help you build it or just do it themselves

Don't know about the Lancair specifically, but most kit aircraft prices do not include the price for the engine, paint, or the instrument panel (gages, radios, navigation, etc). These items can easily cost a lot more than the kit price.

Which Lancair are you talking about, the home-built or the fly away model? Neither are "cheap". By the time you put 2000 hours of your time into building one, you will have 1500 hours in your new 172 at about half the cost in time and money.
BTW, nothing in aviation is "cheap".

A G1000 ( full glass cockpit) 172 costs more like $254,500. (http://skyhawksp.cessna.com/pricelist.chtml)

If they build it themselves you wont have it certified as a homebuilt because you have to build 51% yourself.
