Good, nobody else answer this, the first answer is ok. So does this mean the drive has never been compressed since the box isn't checked though?

If you don't know what they are, then they are likely NOT on.

Basically, go to my Computer, and right-click on one of your hard drives (if you have more than one, else just right-click on the one), and pick properties. Note at the bottom you may see a checkbox that says "compress data" or something like that. That's Microsoft's built-in drive compression, known as DriveSpace. Nobody bothers with it now, as hard drives are so cheap and so massive.

Gutted! i might recommend re-formating it, if it wasn't for the records already on there. initially, i might try & get around it by booting into risk-free mode & attempting it that way, accompanied by checking for as much as date drivers and so forth. i understand what you recommend with that "duh duh" sound, it is the USB failure noise, i've got skilled it myself with different instruments. Afterthough: have you ever tried different USB ports? finally, i might get the force out of it is enclosure & slave it to an inner force on your pc pc (presuming you have one), get the records off it ASAP & go lower back with re-formating it. wish it helps.
