Ok, so I'm going back to work (Part-time) and so there will be a need for a 2nd carseat for our 12 month daughter. Here's the thing. My husband wants me to look at yard sales for a car seat... I dont think so... I dont know if that car seat was involved in an accident or not (which makes them void per safety standards) or how clean another family was, I'm wierd like that, I think of diaper blow outs, puking, sippy cups leaking etc... so I was talking to my mom, and she gave me a $50 towards a 2nd car seat. Am I wrong to want a new one, or should I just make the hubby happy and get a yard sale car seat?!?!?!?
I know this sounds stupid, but it's really bothering me. It's not about money to me, it's about safety, but to him it's about money since its a 2nd seat and I'm only working part time.
Good grief, someone help me lol
THANKS!

Car seats expire after 6 or 7 years (I forgot the exact time). Also you are right about the accident thing. Once it is in an accident they are no good anymore. I would just buck up and get a new one, think how bad you would feel if you didnt listen to your gut instinct. There is something to be said for a "mothers instinct". I never listen to my husband about that stuff....lol.

I don't think you're wrong to want a new seat. I have a second hand booster seat for my son now but I got it off a close girlfriend whose son has recently grown out of it. I bought a new cover since the old one had seen better days and the seat is actually worth $350 which is very dear for a booster seat but its the safest so I'm happy.
Try asking around through friends if they know of anyone wanting to get rid of a carseat that is undamaged and comes from a clean home. Also try looking on ebay as there are some great bargains out there that you can get very cheaply and near new. It might be a trade off. Remember that car seat covers can be sanitised and washed its more worrying if the seat has been involved in an accident.
Good luck and if you do decide to go 'new' then try looking around for a sale or discount outlet to get the best price.
Best of luck

It depends. the one that is in my car (where the baby is usually riding) was brand new, and I put tons of thought into it.....safety, comfort, etc. It was about $90.
we needed one for my husbands truck, but did not want to spend that much as she is not often in it. I did not feel safe just buying one at a yard sale. Luckily, I had met someone locally on the CraigsList. I had already been to her house and bought a really nice highchair and playpen from her. I emailed her directly and asked her if she had a car seat by chance. she did. I felt safe buying it from her since I had seen the house, seen how clean they were, and already had purchased really nice things from her. Plus she had the instruction book, which was a HUGE thing.
Try to find someone you know, or someone that you are vaguely familiar with. Be sure it looks clean, does not smell like smoke or anything funky. And be sure it has the instruction book so that it can be installed and the straps adjusted properly.

Let me first say that I have bought more than one car seat @ a yard sale. I always take them apart & wash them first, though and I have never had any problems. However, you should be able to find a new carseat on sale for about $50 to $75. So if it makes you feel better...go a head & get a new one. You shouldn't be much (if any) out of pocket.

I would never ever buy a carseat from anywhere but a store. It could be expired, or have been in an accident. People aren't going to tell you those things because they just want it off their hands. Just get the new one, explain to your hubby how much safer it will be. I'm sure he wants his children to be safe.

No you are making a wise decision with wanting a new one.
With them now having an experiation date as soon as they come out of the factory, that already lets us know they go bad quick. But the wear and tear a used carseat has a major inpact on the safety of your child.
Just explain that to your husband and if he still disagress tell him to quit being a tightwad :]

Personally, I would have no problem buying and using a carseat from a yard sale.
The fabric of most car seats can be removed and washed. The plastic can be sanitized.
I got all of my carseats used and have had no problems with them. Also, if money is an issue, you can find cheap carseats at places like wal-mart. My sister got hers for $35.00 brand new and it is just as good as the expensive ones.

I would go for the new one. It is true that if someone sells you a 2nd hand one they will not tell you if its been in an accident. I think you are right. You need to get your hubby to see why it is vital to get a new one. You will do the right thing

I say buy a new one. You already have the cash anyways right? So buy a new one. I would use a used one but only from family. And even then I would take it apart and clean it and wash the fabric. There's a lot of children in my family so it's ok..I guess.

Go to a used store that sells baby stuff specifically. I would want something new too! Or just use the $50 toward a new one, and go to walmart for the best price! even look online at there prices before you go
