i have an sd1000 (canon) and i need to take pictures of bands on stage and stuff

what are the best setting to do this?

Concert photography is a bit tricky. If the subject is backlit then you should use the forced flash option if you are near by.

Or try a higher ISO speed and faster shutter speed to capture motion correctly.

Use the camera's Exposure Compensation (aka EV) setting to give +1 or +2 stops extra exposure. Your subject - the performed - will be correctly exposed but the background will be washed out.

I'll guess that you are far enough away that you can't use the flash or don't want to anyhow. Use the spot meter setting and try to avoid picking up any of the light from behind the main subject.
