The walls need to hold back the enormous pressure the concrete will exert upon them. This can be done by external bracing pushing on the outside of the wall. Ties give a better solution by running a bolt between the walls, so pressure exerted by one wall is balance by the pressure from the other wall. This reduces by a tremendous amount, the amount of external bracing. Then the role of the external bracing becomes more to prevent the forms from moving rather than holding back the hydrostatic pressure of the concrete within the forms.
