One of the biggest mistakes made by our political leaders is not listening to the military commanders. WWII politicians wanted to remain neutral even though the military leaders were telling them that we had better get ready because we are headed for the fight. Then Pearl Harbor happened. Korean War, Military leaders wanted to use Nukes to destroy the North Koreans, now look at them still a threat. Vietnam political leaders authorized all air strikes and prevented us from winning, the movie flight of the intruder was based off of facts. Desert Storm, military leaders wanted to finish the fight and bring the government down, but no political leaders stopped it. OIF, military leaders told the political leaders we need this many troops to fight, win and stabilize Iraq. They were told no you get this many. Now here we are. I'm not going to ask a fireman to operate on me for brain cancer so why ask professional politicians how to fight a war. Will we ever learn????

No. That's the way things are done if you want to build a house you get a contractors advise. If you want to win a war you better get the advice of the military. The President is the military [possessive] Commander and Chief. At least the current Commander and Chief actually goes to the war zone. We've had some that didn't. I sure hope the Muslims soon realize that this war makes their religion look bad and decide to create a peace so that we can go home to leave them to run their country. That is what doesn't make sense to me. If they would come to some peaceful terms we will go home to let them have their ways. I think it is obvious that they [you know who I mean] don't care about Iraq or the problem would be over with already.

Generals, generally, know better what troop level is needed to win decisively and care more about their troops than the civilian leadership who worry more about political fallout. Generally.
If I'm going into battle, I'd rather have someone calling the shots with some actual experience.
We got caught in WW II with a weak military at the outset and learned a very painful lesson. Weakness or perceived weakness attracts aggression.

So if it should not be the military advisers determining how many troops are needed, what source would you look to for this information. Perhaps the Dept. of Transportation would be more suited to determine this, or "God forbid" the Dept, of education. Get your head out of whatever darkened location it has become lodged and put it to work.

If you're old enough to remember the fiasco called The Viet Nam War, it was run almost exclusively by the politicians in Washington. As a veteran of that war, I can assure you that if the 'military advisers' had been allowed to do their jobs we could have won that war in two years, max, and left holding our heads high.

To think someone not involved in the situation knows better is just plain ignorant. You don't ask a house painter to fix your car. You don't ask your hair dresser to do your surgery. So why would you ask a politician about military affairs?
A better anolgy than fox in a hen house would be Bill Clinton in a sorority house.

So what you're saying is don't ask the guys who are there every day what they need to run the shop?
Ok, next time my car breaks down, I'm not going to take it to a mechanic. I'm going to take it to a computer repair shop because they would know what's best for my car since I wouldn't want to put the "fox in the hen house" as you call it.
Thanks for your advice.

Not really, under Clinton you had the military advisers cutting the military to half of its size.
