It is a tough decision. I decided not to do it because we do not have any serious diseases in our families. It is also a very costly thing to do, so dont feel guilty if you do not save the stem cells.

Well, since I don't know your family's medical history, I'll just tell you what I decided when I looked into it before my son was born.
It's very expensive, and if nothing runs in your family, then it will most likely be a complete waste of money. Most of the things they can use cord blood to fix are hereditary diseases, and the ones that aren't hereditary, cord blood doesn't do a lot for.
Once I saw the cost, and got over my sticker shock, I stopped researching it entirely, so I don't know exactly what diseases it would help, but it didn't seem worth it to me.

I heard this recently on the news: Even with all the medical technology and advances in medicine out there, scientists still are uncertain how the long term effects of frozen stem cells will thrive after 'thawing'. You might end up paying thousands over the course of many years, and when you do need those stem cells, they may be damaged.
I saw this segment on either 60 Minutes, or CNN, possibly NOVA.

I think that it is a great idea. My husband thought that it was a waste of money since we don't have a family history of any major problems, but I would have loved to do it. Your family history can only tell you so much, there will always be occurances in families with no previous instances of the problems...

I thought about this too with my first pregnancy but once I found how much it is to extract the cells and then keep them (just in case) you ever need them but probably won't, both my husband and I no longer were interested. It's way too money unless people who know they are going to have problems in the future want to do this. I believe in prayer. It works!

My husband and I were considering it seriously talking about it, b/c you never know what could happen.
And would do it, except for the cost of having it done, if it wasn't so expensive then we'd do it.
