Please note though that the rash does not appear "right when you touch it". The rash will take from 8 to 48 hours to appear.

If you ever suspect you were in contact with poison ivy, try to wash the area with soap and water within 10 minutes. If you can do that, you might avoid getting the poison ivy rash. After 10 minutes, it is usually too late since the plant oils will have absorbed into the skin.
