Can anyone help me find someone who will help us? We want to go to San Diego to see my brother graduate from Marine Boot camp, but are having a hard time coming up with money. We need at least $1000 more. Our brother has never seen his 9 month old nephew, and they are talking like he may be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan very soon.
Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please tell me if you know of any programs or people willing to help. Thank you so much!

No. Even though it is an important event, it is not something that any kind of program picks up the costs for. Even if something happens to your brother in the line of duty, there is not an assistance program set up to transport families to the injured Marine's bedside. Before you start thinking it is unfair or cruel, you have to remember the military is run by our tax dollars and that money goes to looking after looking after it's service members first.

If you can't get to the graduation, you will still get a chance to see your brother before any deployments occur. He gets leave after boot camp, after his training in North Carolina, and after his MOS school. He will also be given a block leave between 2 and 4 weeks just before he is actually deployed. You will have several opportunities to spend time with him over the next year.

I've heard of one organization... but I can't recall the name. I do recall, however, that they were able to help with sending the parents only to graduation. Not grandparents or siblings, or nieces or nephews.

Your brother WILL get 10 days of leave following his graduation from boot camp, and will be able to see all of you while he's home then. Following that he'll have combat training and schooling of some type (For his military occupational specialty) and be assigned to his permanent duty station... from there he may or may not be deployed. My son has been in for 3 years and has deployed only once.

Also, boot is only 3 months long... if your brother hasn't seen your nephew, who's nine months old, I wouldn't be asking someone else to provide funds to make sure that happens.

I know there are programs for Grandparents, Parents and spouses but I am not sure about siblings. You can check with http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/AmericaSupportsYou/Content.aspx?ID=44770903&SectionID=1

Other then that check with your local American Legion, VFW, or other Veteran Service Organizations and they would be able to point you in the right direction.

You can do a search for VSO's in your area on the net or look on www.va.gov under organizations and they have a list of many different ones that may have some answers too.

Good luck and tell your brother THANK YOU For his service.

Check the phone book in your area and see if there is a chapter of the Marine Corps League there. Contact them and explain the circumstances.

I don't think that they will assist in that. I know because when my hubby graduated bootcamp he had to pay out of pocket.
