it probably needs to be re-charged back up again with freon, they will get low after being used a lot,you can have this checked, its cheaper now to have it done than it is to wait until it stops working, they usually charge around 45 bucks to recharge those, there's not much too charging the newer systems, good luck with it.

1996 Quest uses R134a refrigerant and the system is just like the Mercury Voyager. So ford system precautions and special type F PAG oil used to lubricate the system. There is a orifice tube that needs to be replaced and inspected each time you remove the refrigerant. Metal particles on the orifice tube screens means catastrophic compressor failure. Properly recharged the systems here in Texas The A/C capitol of the world get as cold as 41 degrees at 100 outside and 20% humidity. Also wash out the condencer ahead of the radatior.

Freon is illegal now, I believe... 96 should have R134a...but if not, then you need to have it retrofit in order to recharge it. I've also heard about FREEZE-12 or something, but I don't know anything about it... You could ask a mechanic about that though. If it's already R134a, all you need is a can and a gauge that will go on the fitting on the low-side hose (it shouldn't fit on the wrong one) if you just have a very slow leak and want to recharge it. If you think, or find out, you have a larger leak, then you'll have to have the drier replaced along with whatever's leaking. If you find it's already charged properly (the gauge in the "full" range), then your compressor might be a little weak, or perhaps some contaminants in the system.

clean the very front radiator of bugs and dirt with heavy duty degreaser , to make a test if the a/c is working fine park the car near a water hose and turn the a/c on max , put a cheap termometer in the a/c vent and leave it for 3 minutes , write the reading down , now use a water hose and pour water in the front of the car grille to get the condenser wet and cool ( the very front radiator where the bugs crash) , check the reading on the termometer or feel the diference if you dont have one , if the diference is very noticiable clean the condenser if not recharge the system.

Go to a professional and have the refrigerant level checked. If it is low, the system will be checked for leaks, then properly recharged.
