If you are looking to clean-up your laptop, you can download, Adaware 2007, Spybot Search and Destroy, CCleaner, and AVG (if you don't already have an anti-virus solution). They can all be found on www.download.com. Simply type in the name of the program in the Search pane, and click Go. Once search results are produced, locate the program, and click on the Download Now button to begin the download. They are all free programs and very good for what you are trying to complete. One thing that I want to add is if you do decide to download Adaware 2007, once the download is complete, and you begin to run the setup, you will come to a screen where it asks for a serial number or product key. Click Cancel on that screen, and it will resume the setup for the free version. That screen is typically used for those who used the premium version of the program, and in this case, you will be using the free version.

If your laptop is getting slow, you may not need more programs -- maybe you should clean house:

1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
-----right-click on the desktop, select Properties
-----click the screensaver tab, on the left where it says "screensaver," select none.
-----click the desktop tab, for background, select none
2. Review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
-----click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu
-----click the Start Menu tab
-----select a program you do not want to load at Startup, then click remove.
-----Caution -- do not touch anything you are not sure of or you will mess up your computer royally.
3. From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. (You can also set days to store history to 0.)
----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
-----These can be found in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
5. Periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — then type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
6. Optional: Speed vs Goodies — in the Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings — you can have visual effects or let Windows select the best options. I am using “Best Performance.” Your choice.
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.

Here is a list of freeware sites -- however -- I don't think anything is entirely "free" -- don't be surprised if your e-mail inbox is suddenly overflowing.

The two main categories are Shareware and Freeware.

Shareware can be better but usually has a "lite" version or a trial period.

The download part is free. The continued use costs money.

You can try
download.com
freeware.com
pack.Google.com
snapfiles.com
softpedia.com
tucows.com

go to Google and type in "free adware". Then at Google type in "Spybot Search & Destroy." You can get just about anthing you want through Google. It might be a good idea to defragment your machine first.
