The dogs face seems cheery, its tail is wagging, and you just know it is in a good mood.

When a dog is sad, it will make a whine sound and its ears will be down.

When a dog is angry, its ears go forward or back, it growls like a grr and it may back away.

You should read a book about dogs to find more information about them. Good luck.

A dog's tail can tell a lot. Wagging doesn't just mean a dog is happy. They will wag out of nervousness or fear even. I have a knack for keeping my dogs happy and I have never had a dog that didn't smile. Look for the smile. (they can all do it, forget what you heard.) Look for the happy dancing. You know, not the, "I have to pee" dance but the squiggling around for no reason dancing, just because you're paying attention to them. Does your dog look at you adoringly?
If your dog does not smile or wiggle or dance with any regularity, that doesn't mean he/she is not happy, but it might.
Dogs can also sigh and huff and will just plop down on a bed in an exhasperated way. THAT is a bad sign. Also, if the dog is not very old yet it just acts like lump? Well, it's possible that that's a trait of the breed, but not commonly.
A dog should look energetic if it is not extremely old. Then again, if it is extremely old, it may lack energy, huff and puff, but it should still smile at you and wiggle with love once in a while and gaze adoringly at the person it loves. If a dog is happy, it will smile, wiggle, and/or dance at least once in a while.

Well, once you get to know your dog's personality, you will know if he is happy or not. I have a lhasa that is 11 years old, and about 7 months ago we added a new addition to our family by purchasing a golden retriever. My lhasa has always been frisky and energetic, but ever since the golden retriever has been here he has been different. He is depressed, and sad and he literally HATES the new dog. I love both my dogs, just like someone loves both of their children equally, but I really wish I wouldn't of gotten the retriever. I feel like the lhasa doesn't think I love him anymore because he is always attacking the retriever and I am always yelling at him and telling him "no!", which of course he isn't used to hearing. Sad really, but I have no choice but to do my best to show them BOTH that I love them. I know I went off track with this, but the point is, if your dog is wagging his tail, jumping up and down, running in circles, tossing a sock up in the air, those types of things, pretty much he is happy. If he is laying under the table all day looking up at you all sad, then he is in a state of depression...believe me, I know from experience.

A dog will let you know how they feel, watch there actions. Do they wag there tail? Do they come to you for attention? Do you supply all there needs?

If you said yes to all these questions, than your dog should be happy.

Depends on some dogs, in my opinion, but my dog jumps on me and licks me, tail wagging, mouth open, ears perched back.
