Too soon to say. This may be more of a propaganda weapon than an actual warplane as such. If it is "as advertised" I would think it is more along the lines of euro fighter typhoon or MiG-29 a highly maneuverable dog fighter with questionable avionics and no stealth capabilities.Taiwanese pilots historically have outperformed pla pilots.I see no reason for the j-10 by itself to change this. China could take Taiwan anytime they want to pay the price (in casualties and international condemnation) of course. But Taiwan defense forces may make the price too high. And of course the united states will assist Taiwan, and the F-22 is superior to anything in the world.

I think it's a decoy. China has lots of fighter aircraft, but that includes WWI style bi-planes. In 2020 China believes it will have its own stealth fighter. Since human piloted fighter aircraft have a -3G+9G limit the only place left to go in technology for those kinds of aircraft are the targeting system and stealth. I believe China will hide their stealth fighters in with their J-10s and other fighters because the stealth fighters will be too expensive to mass produce. I don't think China wants to spend too much time upgrading their non stealth fleet so they can focus on their stealth aircraft. Once those stealth aircrat come on line, Taiwan will just be in constant fear.

Not competitive with the new joint strike fighter or the raptor, its a fine plane, fast manoevarable but no real threat as far as the new generation being produced by uk or usa. Remember stealth ability is the new real weapon in a fast strike aircraft, modern nato aircraft could knock it out of the sky without ever being seen by the j10. It would be like an f18 style, about 1/2 a generation behind the new stuff!

If your question was "was there ever tension between the two nations" the answer is YES. It remains almost the same even today. The Chinese copy the Russian design (from whom they buy air crafts) and make slight modification by incorporating stolen technology from other countries.

I think it is a piece of crap powered by a Russian engine because the Chinese couldn't make their own.
It is a step toward making their own fighter but it is not a match for modern combat aircraft.
Taiwan is more afraid of being smothered in Tactical Ballistic Missiles than J-10s.

It's hard to say how they'd perform against contemporary Western or ex-Soviet designs at the moment - afterall, people did assume the first imported Honda cars would be rubbish.
I wouldn't get my hopes up over it, personally. American and Euro aircraft are usually designed and built on collosal budgets.
