Watch the movie, "Brian's Song". It's the story about football players Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. His name is pronounced throughout the movie as Gale (like the female name Gail) and Sayers (long a and 2 syllables).

If you mean the former Chicago Bears and Kansas Jayhawks running back, it is Gale Sayers with an "s" at the end.

Gale is pronounced like "sail" with a "g". Sayers is pronounced like "layers" with an "s".

Gale--with the long a sound
SAY-err

That's the only way I have heard his name said. And, I think his last name is SAYERS. This NFL hall-of-famer grew up in Omaha, Nebraska; spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears; and it was his friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo that was the theme behind the movie "Brian's Song" (Piccolo's fight with and ultimate death from cancer).
