depends on your dedication, financial status and care you want for the puppy. Make it a vacation. I wouldn't drive 9 hours for a shelter dog though unless you are sure your the right home. Most shelters want you to go through a adoption procedure and will want to check out your home and possibly this dog will not be adopted to you. If it was in a rescue and they have done extensive communication with you then I would risk it. If you are not 100% garunteed the dog before hand its not worth the 9 hours of driving and gas money.
I drove all over the place for my 2 show dogs. I live in Minnesota... I drove to Mayflower, Arkansas to get my Male, Angus. I drove to Stockton, Illinois for my female, Morgandy.
My other 5 dogs are rescues from the area.

If you feel like this could be the pup for you, then yes, it's worth the drive. Make sure to call the shelter first, to insure the pup is there, and still available. Perhaps even fill out an application first, to insure you've been approved, before making the drive.

I live in Tennessee and I don't ship dogs and have had buyers come from as far away as Calif, Virginia, Maryland, Indiana, Ohio. And closer states like Ky, Mo, Al, Ga. I have a dog in Canada, Maine, etc. I have never traveled out of state to buy a pup/dog, but I would if I found the right one.

I have driven clear across the country to get top show prospects. I've also flown to Canada and BC to get dogs. I would not drive that far for a shelter pet, since shelters around me are full and have plenty of dogs to pick from.

Search pet transport on google, they may transport it for you. You might have to pay someone, but it would be well worth it. I wouldn't just give money to a stranger though, they may take off with the dog and not come back.
Check their references first before hiring anyone.
Or, it is worth the drive for a little weekend adventure to pick up a soon to be member of your family. It will be fun. Go for it.

I drove about 2 hrs to get my dog I saw on petfinder. I might go 9 hours, but it depends.

Nowhere is too far. I drove from St. Louis, MO to Dallas, TX to get my chihuahua because she is exactly what I wanted. In fact I think I found her on petfinder also. It's hard for me to remember since it over a year ago. Many blessings.

Try driving less than one hour to your local dog pound. Those poor puppies are going to be killed because most people would rather pay hundreds of dollars for a pure-bred than pay a few dollars for the paperwork to get a happy and healthy mutt. Get a mutt; you will be happier. So will your dog.

I would not drive more than 3 hours
It's up to you, if it's worth it
If you feel in love with the dog, then yes
I have a special needs child, and I have to see my child with the puppy/dog before hand. I need a dog that is cliam and is good with children.
Only you can decided if it's worth a nine hour drive
