I'm trying to raise money for a children's hospital by getting sponsors for a bike ride that I will be participating in in October. My goal is to raise $6000, any ideas? Also, I am looking for corporate sponsorships from big companies (I figure that most of them have a charity fund), what would be the best way to get in touch with these people?

Media advertising?? Maybe in the form of a public service announcement ( PSA )??? Using the creative juices, write a short 15 second read ad and drop it off to the local radio station, asking if they'll add it to their PSA index.

Might want to buy a disposable cellphone for this, so to sort out the sincere from the wierd; simply toss the phone when you're done.

You need to write a generic letter to hand out the big companies, however most will only support you if you have a tax-exemption code {503(c)} which proves you are a non-profit organization. If you do not have a code, use the one from the hospital, but to do this you need a partner who actually works there. In this letter state when, where, and who the event is for. Most companies require three months notice for fundraising donations. You can look up a company online and click on their corporate information page. This will give you an address to send the letter to. You could also contact the local news company/paper and try to get them to do a segment on your ride. Good luck!

Find a friend who works in human resource department of a major company. Ask that person to help you by perhaps giving you fax numbers to send a letter. That letter should be concise, to the point and without errors, and also contains your contact information, (not your home!) Then fax away. Call confirm in couple of days, and expect lots of rejections except for one or two hits.
