Kitties get food, people get a furball in the house. Everyone wins.

Just like a human needs affection, cats or any other pet for that matter, also need affection. It allows them to gain trust in their owners and know that they can depend on the owner to care for and feed them. Otherwise they become anti-social and unfriendly. Just think if you never experienced any affection...how lonely would your life be? It is also very soothing for the owner. Pets have been shown to reduce stress in their owners. So pet your kitty and both of you will be happy!

I've noticed that when two cats live in the same house and they are neutered, they frequently groom one another by licking. I suspect that cats equate out petting of them to this natural instinct.

Your question should more properly be: Why do humans feel the need to pet cats?

Why do humans need sex?

It releases endorphins, which are Happy feelings. Plus its the same reason we need to brush our hair - to stimulate the skin under the hair. It's just required to be healthy.
(This is my answer to your question and the question I answered your question with.)

Maybe humans started petting cats first, and then it became ingrained in their DNA, because it DOES sometimes seem like cats REALLY want you to pet them sometimes, doesn't it? At the same time, however, I always am more than happy to pet them, as I love cats.

I think simply cats can provide pleasure to the owners most of the time.

They don't have to be petted, but if the cat and owner both enjoy it, why not?
