Take deep, full breaths, do not gasp or pant. It doesn't matter how you breath in so don't worry about in your nose and out your mouth the air gets to your lungs at the same time.
Counting paces or steps to time your breathing doesn't work take in the air you need for the speed you are running.

Until you are in good cardiovascular condition you will be out of breath if you run fast, and even if you are in great shape you can always run fast enough to get out of breath.

Dont focus on you're breathing, it'll freak you out into weird body patterns that effect your steps or something else. I suggest after a hill and you're faced with either a straight-away or a downhill to take ONE deep breath and keep going. There are no shortcuts in cross country or track or whatever running, the only way to keep your breath longer than what you have now is to get more fit. Good luck in what you're doing!!!

I do not suggest breathing in through the nose for running, its not as big of an opening to your trachea therefore you get less oxygen.

Ps. Matt (poster above)to get rid of stitches make sure you balance your sodium and water intake. Stitches are caused by an imbalance of these and pretzles or salted nuts can help with sodium defficiency but for water drink about 3 cups 2hr-1hr before running.

When I ran long distance (I haven't run regularly for several months due to a knee injury 80( ), I always concentrated on taking long deep breaths. It helped me to count with my strides: in 2-3-4-5-6 out 2-3-4-5-6. I just repeated that to myself over and over. Breathing through your mouth is fine. Don't listen to people when they say breathe in through your nose. It's too difficult.

Don't pant or breath really fast broken breaths, take full and deep breaths and don't go faster than you're capable of running that distance at.

1. Slow down to conversational pace.

2. Breathe with your mouth open, and take long slow controlled breaths, in and out.

Good Luck

You are suppose to inhale thru your nose and exhale out your mouth. I ran a marathon, and this has never worked well for me. Just run relaxed and breath easily and you should never be out of breath. Your muscles should fatigue before your breathing requires you to quit.

If you can, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. The air is cleaner and cooler through your nose. Also, make sure you don't breathe every time you take a step. I try to make it about two steps for an intake/outtake when doing long-distance. Find what frequency is best for you
