I just put my cat to sleep on Thursday and I have been having horrible nightmares that we buried her alive, and this may sound silly but I need to know that the vet makes absolutley sure that she was dead (he put her straight into the box and I was not in the room when it happened) . Also I dont know what she was sick from if anyone could tell me I would be grateful. Her symptoms included trouble breathing, sudden urination everywhere, loss of appetite, she became lethargic, she had what I can only describe as gunk in her eyes I assume that this was from crying, and she stopped grooming herself, and she layed completly stretched out she never curled up anymore. Even through all this she was still very loving and purred right up to the end.

When answering please dont joke I just lost her, and I had fluffy for 14 years.

I'm so sorry about your cat.

The symptoms you decribed could have been caused by many diseases, but it is clear that she was very ill and by having her put to sleep you spared her a miserable "natural" death.

When a vet puts a pet to sleep, he gives it a massive overdose of anesthetic, through a vein. The heart stops instantly. After a minute or so the vet listens for a heartbeat with a stethoscope. That is protocol (standard procedure) just to be sure.

I have been present at many euthanasias and there is never any doubt that the pet stopped living the moment the solution was injected. But the vet always listens with a stethoscope to be sure.

You can rest assured that your beloved cat felt no pain and died instantly. There is no possibility that she was till alive afterwards.

I know how you feel, I had my 8 yr old cat put to sleep 8mths ago and I still miss him terribly. I was with him and after it is done the vet uses a stethoscope to check the heartbeat has stopped. Vets give a high dose of an anaesthetic to euthanize pets. It is quick and painless for them. They just go to sleep forever. My cat had some symptoms you state and he was diagnosed with diabetes and kidney failure. Before the recall of pet food, I was feeding him Iams foil pouch food. I now have a claim against Iams. Your cat could of had diabetes and or kidney failure. I haven't adopted any cat yet but do so when you are ready. It will get you as much joy and love your Fluffy did. Her purring to the end was showing you her love. Good Luck.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Fluffy. I have had one of my cats for 14 years, also. It's a good, lovely long bit of time to spend with your pet; think about it, Fluffy knew you her whole life. I am sure you made her happy for every moment of it. Your vet went to college for many years, and succeeded at it, all because he wanted to devote his life to helping animals in need of medical care. I am sure you know this as well as anyone else does. However, you probably won't be able to let your mind rest until you have talked to the vet. He's a person just like anyone else, and I am sure he is more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Give him a call on Monday morning, schedule a time to just drop in and have a little talk with him. He will put your troubled mind at ease, just as we are willing to do.
Try to relax, and know that it will get better ever day. I hope it all works out for you. Have a good weekend, too.

Sometimes when something you love very much dies u jsut think the worst. Like when my grandpas died or my grandma I had the same dreams but dont worry fluffy is watching over u she wish u were happy even though she is dead dying for animals isnt that bad but she wishes she was still with u. Maybe when u die she'll stil lb the same but she also made some animal friends as for me there is a stray cat in the back yard sometime i give it milk ^^ but then again im worried milk is bad for the cat but i doubt it anyways your cat is safe in heaven so you dont have to worry the vet prolly made sure it was dead its jsut ur mind tricking u it does it to me a lot too.

oh, I'm so sorry. What a nice pet she was. I'm sure she was really dead, but probably nothing will put you at ease more than to call the vet's office and make an appointment to talk to the vet.
Cats don't cry tears like we do, but their eyes water when sick. 14 is pretty old, and her body probably gave out. I hope you will be reunited in heaven. Not kidding, I really care.

I'm so sorry.

We put our kitty to sleep in April and I understand how you feel. Every morning when I got up I would go to his grave and make sure nothing had disturbed it. The first night he was gone I had a nightmare that I heard him outside mewoing and I couldn't get to him. I panicked about him really being gone, too. We buried him in our yard so I know he was gone but it still bothered me for awhile.

I found a wonderful website, petloss.com I would go there and just talk about him and talk about my sadness. They are wonderful people. You can post pics of your baby and just share or just read what other people say. It really helped me. Maybe it will help you, too. I still miss Blackie. He was my boy.

i'm sorry about your cat my mom just lost hers of 14 yrs too but she was a bit older we just had her 14 yrs...but she died on her own. to me it sound like old age. kiddney faluire.arthritis...old age..... just like mine lacy, she is now with all the others u have pasted before her.... (exp the kiddneys)

yes they check to make sure the pet has past.

i understand u are sad but fluffy is not in pain anymore and u have to let her go.... i believe animals have souls aswell so...tell her that she must move on or what ever....that may sound silly....but we all talk to our pets alive...right? so they can be so bonded to us just like a human soul.

maybe google some pet loss sites. u can post a memoiral page if u want...or just read some very nice poems.

i'm sorry for ur loss.

the vet checked to make sure she was gone... sorry for your lose maybe you could go to the shelter and adopt another cat/kitten since it sounds like you gave Fluffy a great home for such a long time and there are lots of cats in need of good homes like yours. once again sorry for you lose but the pain will get better.. she lived a long happy life and it sounds like you did the right thing by letting her go to heaven without having to suffer.

Unfortunately I have had to put down many animals. Your baby didn't feel a thing. Cats will stop cleaning their selves when they are very ill. I have a suspicion she was very dehydrated near the end causing lethargy, loss of appetite. Also when they are near death, their internal organs begin to shut down causing loss of bladder and bowel control. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for you Allie. I'm sure the vet did check poor fluffy before he put her in the box. i lost my dog two years ago that i had had for ten years, and i still miss her dearly, so i know what you're going through and how hard it is for you. Fluffy knew you were with her and that you loved her till the end and i know that you helped eased things for her. hang in there, i know it will be hard.
