so my mom decided to go to the animal shelter and get the oldest cat there so it could have a better life. we had 4 other cats at the time. we were keeping Gracie in my older sister's room until she was settled in. the dog was not being that mean but the other cats were. we have had the cat for maybe 2-3 months now and she still has to stay in my sisters room. she can only be around Chloe. Chloe is old and does not try to hurt anyone. chase can come in but he does not attack her he just comes up to her and she gets mad. we take very good care of our pets and we did not see this coming. i really want Gracie to be happy. how can we handle this? i feel terrible. any advice would be wonderful.

serious answers only please

The new cat sees your sisters room as its territory. Gracie needs to be allowed out of the room to examine the rest of the house. Please supervise this! There will be hissing and growling, but may be more to establish who is top cat. If it looks like a fight is going to start. Separate the cats again. Make each trip into the rest of the house longer and longer. This may take a while, but it should work. Gracie is dominant, and wants to show it. Remember, supervised visits in the rest of the house. Start with 5 minutes 2-3 times a day, and lengthen it by 5 minutes more every day until she seems more comfortable. With her trying to "defend" just a small room, getting along with the others will be more difficult. Sharing a house is another ball game. Good luck

Hi
I love your mother for getting an older cat. What a great person!
They are going to grow and his untill they decide the pecking order and who gets what territory. If 2 other cats can already approach Gracie with just some hissing then you are almost there already. I would open the door when family is there to mon iter and give free reign
Best to you

my family did almost the same thing. We took in a cat who's owner did not want her, and we already had 2 cats in the house. We expected all to be lovey dovey, but the new cat was so scared, and the 2 either ignored her or hissed. She is doing well now because she keeps mostly to herself and she fell in love with my husband who loves her, too. In time your newest cat will settle into your home. It took our newest cat 4 months to blend in. She's our princess. Isn't it so much better for her than the shelter?

Yes. Let the cats all interact with each other. They will get used to each other in time.

There's no sense in keeping the cat locked up in the bedroom.
