"...I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those at Damascus, then at Jerusalem and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and perform deeds worthy of their repentance." (Cf. Act 26:19-20)

Indulgences are vastly misunderstood by most Protestants, and frequently "apologized for" by well-meaning Catholics who think the practice has been discontinued.

1. A person can NOT buy his way out of purgatory or hell. Those who encouraged this understanding were perpetuating a grave abuse of the doctrine.

2. Gaining indulgences do not render the sacrifice of Christ useless. Rather, indulgences are available to the faithful precisely because of Christ's all-sufficient sacrifices, and because of the glorious works of the saints, works peformed in union with the grace of Jesus Christ

3. Even when one gains an indulgence, one is not excused from the necessity of true contrition for one's sins and absolution in the confessional.

Indulgences are much misunderstood:
that one can buy one's way out of purgation or even hell
that they get you "time off" Purgatory
that one can save them up for sins not yet committed
that indugences negate the all-sufficiency of Christ's perfect and infinite merits from His Incarnation,Death and Resurrection
that they have nothing to do with grace
that since Trent one can still buy indulgences
that indulgences do not need repentence and real openness to grace to be "workable"

Just one of the many "improvements" made by the Catholic Church. Another was substituting "saints" for "gods and goddesses". No coincidence that it used to called the ROMAN Catholic Church.

Don't you see that these guys broke away from the true church just so they could redefine Christianity in their own image, and according to their own traditions?

It's not about truth or authentic sprituality. It's about temporal power and idealogy.

It's the "falling away" from the truth that was prophesied in scripture.
