YES YES YES!! I worked as a housekeeper for two years and always did my best to make the rooms clean and tidy. I left extra towels, coffee, and other items without being asked, I would even fold a few clothes for them, or tuck their children's stuffed toys under the blankets, just to make the room look homier. Some rooms were dreadfully filthy, and I'd have to deal with some of the nastiest bathroom messes you can imagine, yet guests were so damn cheap it was aggravating. If you can afford the room, you can afford a tip! If your housekeeper does a good job, leave a buck or two to show your appreciation. The next best thing is a note saying what a great job she did--a little praise now and then makes people feel less like machines following a program.

you don't need to, nor is it customary (sad to say). most housekeepers make minimum wage. leaving a tip is one of the nicest things a person can do - especially if you are a little messy ;) i recommend leaving it in an envelope in the room OR at the front desk at check out with your room number and the housekeepers name OR just room # & dates you stayed. see what can happen at check out is the maid is not the initial "stripper" of the room.... a houseman (person) can often come through and "strip" all the linens from check outs to get laundry working more quickly. sad to say, as tipping is not common place, the tips can often "leave with the laundry" especially if the housekeepers don't tipout the housemen.

I believe the average is about $2.00 per day that you stay. If you have the same housekeeper your entire stay and they give you xtra towels, soaps, etc and go out of their way to make your stay comfotable....I will leave an xtra few dollars. I just leave it on one of the desks in the room when I'm checking ouy.

If they did a nice job yes. If you leave a note asking for some more towels or soap..ect. and they do, tip them something. And if you had a really messy room...and they make it look amazing after, tip.

Not in Australia. People are paid decent wages.

In the US, they are underpaid, so they need tips to survive.

In the USA, Big Business has effectively removed any protections for the 'little people' workers by destroying Unions.

Absolutely! Usually a dollar per day of your stay, perhaps more if it is a very pricey hotel.

Why would you pay someone to do what they are already getting paid to do?

My wife cleans peoples houses for a living. she gets paid according to the agreed amount. She meets the requirements of the messy house owner, and gets her money. if she doesn't, she doesn't get asked to come back.

About $2 per day is appropriate and customary.
