In Christianity what exactly is mental prayer?

By mental prayer I mean as taught by the Desert Fathers, and such saints as St. Teresa of Avila

It is meditational prayer, or contemplative prayer, composed in the mind alone, without spoken words, knowing that God hears our thoughts as readily as He hears our words.

mental conditioning and psychological ploy ...prayer doesn't work
