Umm, ikes, I don't think this question instantly labels him a liberal... It seemed pretty neutral to me.
Moving on from...that.
It does appear sometimes that they're treated better than we are. For example: Does anyone remember a number of years back they were thinking of using a decommissioned aircraft carrier as a prison, but it was considered "below standards?"
Also, when NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii closed in '99 the barracks were supposedly going to be used to house homeless people. The Hawaiian government, however, made the federal goverment spend millions on renovations first...for the same reasons are the carrier example above.
That seems sort of messed up to me...
But you have to remember, in the end those guys and gals in the military get to go out and do, for the most part, whatever they want. And that prisoner is sitting around, staring at a wall, and doing next to nothing all day long. Although the military pay isn't all that great, it sure beats $0.03 per hour some inmates earn.
So after you dig past the surface, who's really getting treated better seems pretty obvious to me.

Geneva Convention requires certain treatment for prisoners of war you cannot legally go under that; for civilian prisoners ten the courts have set standards for the treatment and living conditions they can be held under. I do not think the military troops are treated worse then the prisoners in most situations; a criminal may be better off then the military on the ground in a combat area but that is not the treatment the military man will face every day of his career. As a Vietnam veteran I would not have traded my time in combat for a prison cell even if I would have been safer.

You do realize there are criminals in prison? Prisons are filled with people who have no remorse for their crimes and no true moral compass.
I was in the military. No matter how bad things got I always knew my sisters and brothers in the uniform had my back. Unlike prisoners military members have a strong moral code, a knowledge of right and wrong, and a kinship that lasts long after your last day in uniform.
There is a dignity to military life that only military members know. It is more than love, more than family, it is a commitment only we know.

I highly doubt anyone would want to work as a corrections officer if you took away their ac, and it only costs around a dollar per meal to feed prisoners. As a soldier, unless I'm out side, I almost always have ac, and a 3 squares. No one forces anyone to join the military either.
