Say you've known someone most of your life, and aren't really a close friends, but more like a friendly acquaintance.
If they recently got a doctorate degree, should you start referring to them as Doctor ____ instead of their first name?

Ask the person whom you are addressing. My husband has his doctorate and is only addressed as Doctor when in a professional setting.

If you are already on an informaL first name basis with someone, that should remain so, regardless of what degrees they may receive. However, if you previously addressed them formally, as Mr or Mrs or Ms, then you should switch to Dr. as the form of address.

If they were John or Mary before they are still John or Mary in your social setting unless they have an enormous stuck up problem. Calling them Dr. occurs in the appropriate professional setting.
