NEVER pay that much to RENT camera. That camera man is a prick. You can buy really nice high quality cameras for much less, and at least it would be yours.

Fairness is a matter of an informed decision made by two adults. If both of you know exactly what you are getting and are adults that agree upon it, then it is fair.
But it sounds like in this case, maybe your wish list just exceeds your budget.
A professional camera operator with an HD cam may cost you that much. But is that what you really need? If this shoot is for a wedding or something similar (i.e. family memories), then shop around for people who specialize in events and don't fuss at them if it is not in HD.
But if this is for a commercial shoot which could either make or break your business, then open your wallet wide if the fellow is really worth his salt.
"It takes money to make money", they say.

Sorry... the phone bill is your responsibility. You could have had those numbers blocked by the phone company. It's a little late now but unless you can show he's mentally handicapped or wish to sue him, I don't believe there's much you can do. You can arrange payments but that's gonna be about it. Get a long distance and 900/976 numbers so it doesn't happen again!!!

This guy is a crook. How can he make you pay that much to rent a camera. You could rent a car for 100 dollars a day. This is so sad how people try and take advantage. This guy thinks you are a fool and will try and rip you off. Please report him to the local BBB. Also let him know that 300 dollars is a fair price to charge for video services.

Maybe he is very skill full cameraman, must pay higher cost to hire him. To get a good picture, it depends on the skill of camera man, not only the camera. If two camera men shooting video using the same type of camera, you see, the result is different. So be a skill full cameraman

When i did videography in the Los Angeles market, the camera, recorder, tripod, mic and one tape came with the shooter. My day rate was higher for Betacam than SVHS. $1200 as a day rate for consumer HD is excessive. Are there other throw ins, like audio mixer, lighting, flying jibs or steadycam mounts?

It depends what kind of camera he's using. Imax or HD may be still pretty expensive. You can buy an awesome one for about $5000.
