Our civilization is rapidly approaching an impasse. We have become masters at manipulating magnetic fields, but the root source of our magnetic pipeline, involves fire. A large percent of humanity would be doomed without access to combustion. Nuclear fusion seems to be humanities only hope if the population continues at it's exponential growth rate. Otherwise the world cannot support 12 billion humans, if we are to continue using internal combustion as a primary energy source.

Finding new energy sources is something were doing to reduce our dependence on foreign countries, and to help reduce our carbon footprint, to help slow down the effects of Global Warming to a natural rate. Not the other way around.

Finite amount - exponential demand = bye bye

The clip provided is one of a series of eight. It is long and dry, but I recommend watching the whole thing. I wish I could just cut and paste the important bits, but that would be copyright infringement ... so you'll have to watch the whole thing. It is worth it.

It is a lecture regarding arithmatics, population and energy. Should answer your question quite nicely.

Pay particular attention to one statement he makes in this clip. At the end of each "doubling time" you will need more energy than all the energy used in history up to that point. That is just the first point that will "give you pause".

Independence from Global Corporations is the only reason to develop alternative energy sources.

First let's correct your question? Since global warming does NOT exist what are some other reasons to find other energy sources. Please do not join all the other mental patients promoting the global warming hoax! It makes you appear uneducated and unable to think for yourself. Please note that Yahoo answers as of September 10, 2007 will not accept anymore questions involving hoaxes or myths. Any questions promoting hoaxes such as global warming will subject the Yahoo member to the loss of his/her Yahoo member ID. Just to let everyone know this in advance as Yahoo has not done a good job of letting this fact be known.

Infinite, cleaner, cheaper, safer, healthier. Economic, environmental, technological, scientific and political benefits

The primary energy sources are the fossil fuels - oil, coal and gas. All of which are finite, although reserves are greater than is often purported be the case (upwards of 80 years for oil, more for coal and gas but I don't know the figures off hand). In time they'll run out so it makes sense to preserve supplies wherever possible.

The extraction of fossil fuels has a huge environmental impact affecting, and in some cases destroying, many habitats. It adds to land, sea and air pollution and the industrial plants are generally unwelcomed intrusions on the landscape which local residents object to on a variety of grounds from safety to devaluing property prices.

The extraction and processing stages produce a cocktail of toxins and chemical byproducts, many of which are harmful to humans, wildlife and the greater environment. The byproducts range from carbon monoxide to arsenic, spoil to mercury and a range of chemical slurries.

In the case of oil prices will rise rapidly when we have to start extracting the impurities (most oil left on the planet is mixed with impurities such as sand and has been left alone so far). As reserved dwindle we'll be forced to extract from increasingly difficult locations which will require massive capital outlays and increased running costs - all of which are passed on to the consumer. When implemented on a large scale renewables can be chepaer than conventional fuels and with advances in technology prices are falling whilst fossil fuel prices are rising.

The development of alternatives, renewables and more efficient products has led to many technological and scientific advances, something the Japanese and Europeans are taking advantage of in a big way, particularly in the motor vehicle industry.

Many countries are reliant on imports of fossil fuels. Renewables such as tidal, wave, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal etc are available to everyone, everywhere (tidal and wave excepted for landlocked countries). We've already seen countries holding other countries to ransom by withholding fuel supplies and some would say we have gone to war because of oil.

there is 3 components which would be expoited. a million) the sunlight - we can use the image voltaic directly with photovoltaic cells, or convert the sunshine into warmth and use a image voltaic thermal generator. The sunlight additionally powers the wind and the wind additionally powers the sea waves. Rivers used for hydroelectric, are the consequence of accumulated rain, which happens because of the enter of image voltaic potential. Bio fuels are additionally saved image voltaic potential, the plant life harness image voltaic potential to enhance, then we refine the plant life into gasoline. in case you opt to get technical, fossil fuels are saved image voltaic potential besides, yet they have been sequestered from our environment for thousands and thousands of years, so applying them will replace the climate into something lots extra heavily equivalent to what it replaced into thousands and thousands of years in the past. And the variety of existence that has progressed to stay interior the climate we now understand, will ought to conform, finally starting to be extra like the existence replaced into for the period of that element era. which ability mass extinctions, very like we are at present seeing interior the international, and the achievable disappearance of persons. 2) the earth - geothermal potential, from radioactive decay of minerals in the middle of the earth, and from image voltaic absorbed into warmth on the floor. Extracted by ability of digging miles deep holes into the earth to get entry to the intense temperatures at those depths. 3) the moon - the moon pulls on the sea turning out to be the tides, which could fill a reservoir and swap a generator while the tide is going out. i think of all of those components ought to be utilized, apart from fossil fuels.
