I have a pug/pekeinese. She is so great and the most loving, best natured dog. I WOULD recommend one! NEVER have had a problem caring for her. She is so easy ! No problems.

I have a pug, my 1st one, and now it's my favorite breed. They can have some health problems - such as the breathing thing - but they have plastic surgery (surprisingly reasonable, and I live in D.C. where everything is pricey) to open up their nostrils a bit. One warning: they shed like crazy. All the time! The black pugs don't shed as much. But, I deal with it. They are a wonderful breed - very smart, but a little stubborn, so consistency is very important. I think everything else has been mentioned. Good luck!

They often have breathing problems because of their pushed-in faces... That could jack up some vet bills.
Before you decide, go get a book or two from the library on the care of pugs and see if it's worthwhile for you. The last thing you want is to get a dog, get attached to it, to only be up to your ears in vet bills or something.
Then - look for a pug rescue society, instead of shelling out a ton of cash.

Pug are very popular right now so over breeding is a concern. They can have breathing problems and skin problems. They tend to over heat rather quickly so if you live in a very warm climate they need to be kept indoors. I don't know how old your daughter is but if she is under 15 years old than getting a dog for her may not be a wise thing. Puppies are very cute but once they are grown they tend to lose their appeal to younger children. Plus taking care of them becomes mom job instead of your daughters.
You know her better than anyone else. If she is super responsible than yes get her the dog. If you have any questions about that than wait until you know for sure she will take care of the dog and be really responsible.

I've known many people with pugs and they aren't any more difficult than any other breed. They are very sweet dogs.
Go to www.akc.org and on the left-hand side click "breeds"- they tell a lot about each breed including the pug.

I own a pug and they really aren't. They are more playfull than they look. The only problem you may have is that if you don't train it to go to the bathroom outside at a young age you will have a big problem later on.

health related concerns to be aware of with a pug.
because of their bulgie eyes they often develop cataracts when older (8-10 years) due to them finding it hard to lubricate their eyes .
because of their punched in noses they often get over weight.- the reason being they find it difficult to breathe when exerting themselves so often don't get enough exercise.
diet control is a must.
sometimes the wrinkles in their faces get fungal infections so be sure to wash their face, especially after eating.
dental issues are not uncommon (again ,due to punched in face)
they are a great dog and it just takes knowing what to watch for to be able to give them a long and happy life
