Arrowroot. Who doesn't keep an extra box of cornstarch on hand?

You can use Wondra (a finely ground flour), or arrowroot (in the spice aisle) or regular flour. These aren't exactly the same, but they're close.

Yes there is... its called Arrowroot.
I don't know if its available in local grocery stores but you can get it online at http://www.penzeyspices.com I buy all my spices from there and really like them, if you live in a big town you may be lucky and have a one of their stores in your town.

regular white flour will work for breading AND thickening.

Arrowroot will work for thickening (most ppl dont' have this on-hand, so it's not especially useful as a sub.)
