I've had a severe headache for 3 days now. Over the counter medication does not help - not even migraine tablets. I have seen the out of hours GP today who gave me Codeine and diclofenac which took most (but not all) the pain away but left me feeling really drugged and dozy. I won't be able to work like that, especially as I have to fly to Southampton (from Yorkshire) on Monday for 2 days. I'm drinking at least 2-3 litres of water or water based drinks (i.e. sugar free diluted cordials, etc), plus my usual tea (about 4-6 large mugs a day). I exercise, I've been going out to the park with my son to get some fresh air, etc. but it won't shift. I know it's not a migraine as I have those occassionally and this is different - across the top of my head rather than over my eyes where I would normally get migraine pain, although I am sensitive to light. Any suggestions as to what this could be or what else I could do to ease the pain without being drugged up?

This is most likely a variant of your normal migraine pattern. People with migraines normally get a familiar distribution, but will on occasion have a different pattern appear. In persons with migraine histories, the headache is assumed to be migrainous unless accompanied by other symptoms. The photophobia (sensitiivity to light) is a common migraine trait.

If the medications are not working, the key to control is proper relaxation. Techniques such as biofeedback are very helpful. But in the short term, go to a darkened room, turn off all sound except soft calming music (I have found new age works best) start trying to relax. If you try relaxing your toes and feet first and then relaxing the muscles in your lower legs and moving your way up the body and arms to the neck. Often imagery will help also. While relaxing as described above, imagine yourself in a place that is relaxing to you. An example would be to imagine yourself on a beach, laying in a hammock, a cool drink by your side. Imagine the waves coming in and the breeze. Once you have this type of picture, try to imagine your pain as a sand castle on the shore and as the waves come in the sand caslte is broken down and slowly washes away.

I know this sounds a little strange, but I have used this method often in patients who either could not take medications due to the side effects or when the medications did not work.

I use this technique now for my own migraines and have taken nothing stonger than paracetamol in a couple of years. I have found I can reduce my headache to a level where I can work in about 10-15 minutes using this technique, but I have practiced a lot.

When you have a chance, see a provider who specialises in headache management.

Good luck, and bless you!

EDIT: I recommend that all my patients look at this website:
www.headaches.org.

If you go to the patient section, and then educational resources, you will find a headache diary, in which you keep track of the headaches, symptoms, effective treatments and possible triggers noted. Also look at the Headache dietary section for possible dietary triggers. Finally look at the "How to Talk to Your Headache Doctor" page. It outlines the information that they need to best diagnose and properly treat your headaches.

Sorry to hear about your headache. My son had a severe headache for a couple of days, and no over the counter meds. would touch it, and a headache is somthing he seldom has ever had. It left as quickley as it came, but he is going for an MRI scan, which will rule out any more serious problems, and pardon the pun, give you piece of mind. I wounder if the pressure from flying could be a factor. Well I wish you all the best I would like to know how you make out. All the best John T

Try to find the way to relax but AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, stop whatever you are doing, give yourself a break, and even if sounds weird-funny or whatever... RELAX... Breath......... put your mind in blank.... everything has a solution... keep on relaxing your self... well being more seriously:

First, try to find a place that you can relax put some comfy clothes, take out your socks, put some relaxing or in silence... if possible put your body in the most relaxed position (in your back, or with your legs against a wall, etc) avoid any bad thought just concentrate in your breathing, then in your heartbeating, so imagine places that are harmonious for you (a river, the sea, a desert, a sunset, a forest) wherever you feel safe and comfy, and keep holding that image in your head, feel the air, in calm in complete calm let yourself relax, deep relaxation can help you to find any answer.

and try to have this space of deep relaxation DAILY if 5 minutes good 5 minutes if more even perfect, this will enhance your concentration and will give your mind a peaceful moment where you can get your strength again, remember that all the problems have their solution.

usually headaches are a result of something that we "feel" like is hard to solve or to fix, after you are relaxed, give some time to think about what is making you feel so stress, sometimes too can be a bad diet result, sometimes as well can be that you need to check up your eyes... it can be a lot of stuff, try also a general check up with a Doctor, but it sounds more like stress.

Hope the headache goes away soon and feel better.

:)

I am not sure there is much point in listing hadache causes, however here are a few:-

No cause
Tension
Migraine
Malignant Hypertension
Viral illness
Bacterial disease
Toxic states
Poisons
Raised intra-cranial pressure
Tumours

That was only a fraction of the possible causes and I am certain it served little purpose to list them.

I would definitely get that checked out as soon as possible! My brother had the same situation and it ended up being a tumor in his brain. Don't freak out though because headaches are caused by a lot of different things. Could be dehydration, caffeine withdrawal etc. Check it out online. Hope this helps

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
