I've subbed yogurt before, it works.
(and mayo would add like a billion calories.)

I dont think so I mean if it says sour cream then it says it for a reason, maynnaise would give it a tangy texture and yoghurt well I just couldnt imagine yoghurt in a chocolate cake you know what I mean and also what would happen to mayonnaise and yoghurt once there put in the oven to bake? Will they stay the same texture etc or will they go funny and curdle? I'd say just to be on the safe side to stick with sour cream, that way you know your following the recipe, but if you dont have it and you cant get any maybe instead of making the cake make them into muffins and try a little bit with yoghurt and some with mayonnaise and see how they turn out and how you can better the recipe for next time.

I would substitute the plain yogurt. Part of what the sour cream does is provide acid to interact with the baking soda to help the cake rise. Yogurt would have similar acid content although it will have less fat. Mayonnaise would not be as acid and your cake may not rise properly. Of course, the sour cream WOULD be best!

Generally you can substitute those things interchangeably in baking. However it can effect the sweetness of the end result. Going more sour could require a bit more sugar. If it's light, or reduced calorie yogurt it won't have the same fat content, so I'd recommend the mayonnaise.

I've heard of draining plain yogurt through cheese cloth or plain paper towels to take out extra water (whey). I don't know if that is supose to make it like sour cream or thicker like cream cheese. I think it would be okay to use it like it is. If there is other ingredients for taste then the sour cream may just be for a creamy texture of the food. What is the recipe, the other ingredients?

Yogurt is often substituted for sour cream in savory dishes, it would probably be fine in the cake.

yogurt of course. Mayonnaise will make it taste like crap. But make sure it is plain yoghurt. Or just send hubby to get sour cream!

I use Fage Greek yogurt. It is thick like sour cream and doesn't give you that off flavor of mayonnaise.

Yes, you can use either plain yogurt or mayo. My grandma used to make a mayonnaise cake-it was so good!

You can use plain yogurt, no problems. Mayo contains too much oil, and I think adds a funky (off) flavor.
