For Tex/Mex chili, no beans. For all others, pintos and kidney. Love chili either way but you gotta respect the Texas style.

Definitely beans.
Although what kind is up to you. I personally never liked kidney beans so I use the old Libby's in tomato sauce. But if you have a favorite, go with that.
Chili is one of those truly personal dishes. You can really add anything you think will taste good in your chili. So experiment a little add something that strikes your fancy and see how it goes.
Good luck.

Red and white kidney beans and black beans. LOTS of veggies including mushrooms, green and red peppers, chili peppers, onions, celery and carrot chunks. No meat. Maybe some crumbled tofu or "veggie ground round." Serve with hard tack bread and an ice cold beer.

In the mid-west light red kidney beans are required unless you happen to be in Cincinnati.

I love to put Black Beans and Black-eyed peas in my chili
c-ya
BTW, if you put about a half cup of cocoa powder (NOT the sweetened kind - the bakers kind) it will really give your chili a deep, rich flavor.
