In my Former Life as Marine we were required to run at least 3 miles as part of our training requirements. We were taught to breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. It actually works best if you can teach your self a breathing pattern.

Distance running itself is real good, maybe the best. However, yogic deep breathing exercises could also help. Check a yoga site for directions, but in general the idea is fill your lungs slowly starting at the bottom, fill completely, hold for a few moments, and slowly release, then hold when your lungs are empty. A yoga site can give precise directions. My yoga instructor has astronomically huge lung capacity from deep yogic breathing. Also try to run up hills if you get the chance, that helps a lot. Try to avoid running down hills tho, its real tough on the knees.

I did a web yahoo search on your question . . the site below is what I had found to explain most of your running questions. The breathing paragraph is about 3/4 down the page. It is not exactly how I was taught to breath while running. I guess we all have to explore new techniques.

When you are running take deep, full breaths, don't worry about in your nose and out your mouth, or timing your breaths with your steps, just breath.

Take in the air you need for the speed you are running.
Don't gasp or pant, as you develop your cardiovascular system your lung capacity improves, because your ability to uptake oxygen into your blood stream is an indicator of your endurance.

The more distance you run the better you will become.

breath in your nose out your mouth.

breath through your diaphragm.

make sure you are breathing in and out equal amounts. do not breath in a lot and out a little or vise versa

as my coach says " do not pant like a dog hah heh hah"

if your face is turning red your breathing is off.

check out some yoga sites theyre usually helpful especially try www.hathayogalesson.com
