because they are attracted to them and would like to be closer.

Well, being social creatures and wired to mate and to reproduce, at a pretty early age humans begin to develop bodies that allow that to happen, which triggers an attraction to the opposite sex (in most cases, anyway).
Dating is the process that our society provides for us to "look around" for the one we eventually think we would like to procreate with. Or that's the point anyway - to perpetuate the species, to avoid extinction - to keep this ball turning with humans on it to counter the empty expanse of nothing but water and dirt that would occur should we all suddenly go "poof".
