i work in the airport cargo(we also handle animals)...for delta..so i think i can answer your question...
the dog will most likely have to go through customs before you have contact with him in mexico...then again, its mexico so their laws are probably different....
well, the dog routinely will go to the cargo office (if they have a separate office for that)......
you can request that it go to baggage service so that you can pick it up in the main aiport where you get your luggage, just call the airport and tell them that you want the dog sent to baggage service...(they might not be able to do it since it has to go through customs, but its worth a shot)
MAKE SURE that you have all the shot records, vet records, etc... for the dog...
people have showed up to us the day of their flight and the didn't have one paper....we couldn't ship the dog...
they are much more strict with dogs going internationally...also...the crate must be big enough so that the dog can stand up and turn around it in...if not, they might not let you ship the dog...
if you care about your dog..(and still have time to change arrangements)..ship him on continental!!!! we also handle cargo for continental and...they are MUCH better than delta!
the people are just...i dont know, they take much better care of their cargo and animals than delta does....
good luck
most importantly. make sure you have the right papers...if not, you will have a hard time in mexico...then again, it is mexico....but i can gaurantee that coming back to the usa with out proper papers for the dog will be a biggggg pain!!!
ok well, hope this helps...
oh and...i dont know if the pilot will be able to help you or not...they don't usually communicate with freight runners or anything...i guess its worth a try, but don't depend on them....
one more thing....
delta has heat restrictions for shipping animals...i think if its over 85 degrees Fahrenheit they won't be able to send it....continental DOES NOT have heat restrictions because they have air conditioned vehicles that pick the animals up right at the flight...

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) could be the capital of Mexico and an unbelievable town surrounded by grand hill ranges. To see that town you are able to choose the very best option hotelbye . The city's location is unquestionably breathtaking. Two superb snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower over it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also keeps numerous reminders of its previous and these are issues that attract the tourists. The defeating center of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in actuality the country's first structure was proclaimed in 1813 and now's one of the very visited host to Mexico City because it's one of many world's biggest squares. In Mexico City you can also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

You can either fly to John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or Newark Liberty (EWR). JFK and LGA are located within New York City; EWR is located across the Hudson River in New Jersey. Each of these airports has its advantages and disadvantages but your best bet is to search for flights to all NYC airports (you can simply type in "NYC" in Expedia) to get the cheapest option/shortest duration. Each of these airports is accessible by public transportation or cabs so if you're not renting a car you can also fly into one airport and fly out from another airport. The only airport I sometimes try avoiding flying to/from is Newark. Taking a cab there from New York City is extremely expensive because NYC cabs are not allowed to pick up fares in New Jersey (and vice versa). You can get there by NJ Transit rail and the AirTrain monorail, but that is more expensive than taking public transportation compared to JFK and LGA and sometimes you may have to wait a long time for a NJ Transit train to Newark if you are not traveling during rush hours (they often like to schedule 3 trains within a 15-minute period and then don't have another train for another 30-45 minutes).

I flew with my dog when I moved to HI. I took him by the vet first to get him something to help with the trip - Your dog will need a sedative. I picked up mine in the baggage area - they have a special area to pick up your dog. He was not there when I got there so I did ask a baggage handler and they said he was on his way. I know it is harrowing. Good luck to your and the pup. I flew Delta as well, and it was a good experience for both of us.

I would say that when you go to the airport and you turn in your ticket they grab your dog and pt them in a kennel. After they put dogs including yours on a cart carrier. When your about to leave. There is a special room for pets that is supervised while the plane is moving. Well unfortunately. Dogs don't like this. For them it is scary and horrible. So you might want to make it happy when you land. =)
