Maybe we just need to make sure people are actually educated in schools. Our entire culture needs to be changed. Our newspapers allocate more space to astrology than they do to science. Its no wonder ignorance is so rampant.

The only folks I know of who really refuse to understand the scientific definition of "theory" are the fundamentalists, and they hate everything to do with science. I say keep the original definition and leave the willfully ignorant Fundies to stew in their own stupid juices. They're the ones who refused to take their own education seriously. Why should those of us who diligently studied our lessons have to accommodate the fools among us?
Edit: I wholeheartedly agree with novangelis' assessment (below). Creationists deliberately create confusion about the meaning of the word simply to conceal that all the legitimate evidence supports evolution -- and I still say, let them stew in their own stupid juices. They've done enough damage to America's schools and research programs already.

Most people have an approximate understanding. Only Creationists seek intentional confusion in order to mask the fact that all the evidence is in the favor of evolution. There is no reason to pander to the intentionally ignorant. They demand enough already, such as sabotaging science education.

Maybe it's just because they extended that theory and reached a level of understanding that theory that imply the use of other word like... "definition" for instance ;).

I doubt changing the word would help anyone "get it". Those who don't understand the difference don't want to.

No. Please no! No more changing words to suit others... Fundies do that ALL the time to suit themselves, we don't need to fall in line with them.
Tell them to buy a friggin dictionary.

The masses are the problem, we should educate them more, it's their responsibility not to be ignorant.
