Ben and Jerry's! Most any of their flavors are great, especially the half baked, which is Vanilla with brownie pieces and chocolate chip cookie dough.

For most people, the best brand and flavor would be the one you like the most, of course, unless you have an objective palate and are good at evaluating things regardless of personal bias.
I can tell you my favorite, but I can't tell you which is best. My favorite is no longer available, and was Breyers or Dreyers (I don't recall) unsweetened vanilla ice cream that got all its goodness from cream and vanilla and had no sugar or artificial sweeteners added -- or needed. That stuff was absolutely delectable! YUMMmmmmmm......

Hello:
My friend Lisa is from Tennessee and she ships Purity brand of," Moose Tracks Ice Cream,"to me and I am telling you that this is the BEST BRAND of ice cream that I have EVER HAD,I am not kidding! It is a high quality chocolate ice cream that has pieces of chocolate in it and Reese's peanut butter cups and it can usually only be found in the southern states. I live in Michigan so,when Lisa ships this ice cream to me,it is savored to the very last bite because it is just that good! ;-)

I'm going to go with Breyer's Vanilla.
Breyer's is very rich and smooth tasting, excellent quality ice cream. I personally go with vanilla because of its flexibility. You can add any flavor you want to vanilla and get whatever you feel like that day.

My absolute favorite ice cream, Haagen Daz Reserve Pomegranate Bars! I'd say that they are to die for, but to me, they are to kill for! They are $4.99 a box at Safeway with only 4 in the box.
The bar is dipped in a fragile outer coating of dark chocolate (deeeelisssssh!) Underneath the dark chocolate is the smoothest, creamiest pomegranate ice cream!! When you bite into the bar and the chocolate and pomegranate mix together, it is indescribable! Eeeerrr, ummmm, 'scuse me, I need to make a quick run to Safeway!

McConnell's Santa Barbara Vanilla Bean, unfortunately available only in California.
It's dense, rich and not too sweet, the kind that melts so purely and fantastically in your mouth!

I think Dreyer's is the Best Ice Cream ; but it depends on who you ask .lt's just my opinion
