I'm going to Paradise Island this Tuesday and can't wait to get there. My ? is about the graduation family part of it. I have a big family and have a sister whose 38 with her husband and 3 little boys and an 35 yr old bro with same size fam. They with my parents want to come to the grad but coming from Boston its not a 2 hour drive. Therefore is there enough things for the to do down there and besides the grad ceremony would it be worth it for them to go? They're gun ho but I question if it will be worth it? What do you think?
And Please have experience with this
Thanks!

When my son graduated from boot camp, I took both my daughters out of school for a few days and we made a mini-vacation out of it. I'll never regret taking them along. They were just spellbound.. and they missed their brother a LOT... so it was a great decision.
or advice on this subject from folks who were just recently involved in Grad events at PI, go to http://www.marineparents.com It's THE best online resource for everything USMC... the Recruit Message Boards is where you want to look.. and just ASK a question about it... on the PI boards. Those folks will be SO happy to help... they give great advice, and will have lots of ideas for what your family members can do to keep the kids entertained.
Recommendation... this is about YOUR son... and about YOU enjoying this huge event in HIS life... it's not about a huge extended family gathering. He's going to be VERY nervous on Family Day... happy to see you, of course, but they're still VERY MUCH under the eyes of their DI's... and anything you or your family does to call attention to your recruit will be a BAD thing. So consider carefully what your options are. It could be better to plan a huge family gathering while he's home for his 10 days leave after boot. (Just my two cents worth!)

You have Hilton Head Island about 10-15 miles to the south of Parris Island. It has great beaches. You have Savannah about 20-25 miles to the south and it has a great historic district. You have Charleston 50-60 miles to the north. It has a great beach, historic district and downtown. About 80-100 miles to the south you have some great beaches with Jekyll Island, St Simon's Island and Cumberland Island.
I would stay in Charleston, SC and go to Parris Island for family day and graduation. Since the only times you will be allowed to see the "Newby Marine" is the afternoon before graduation for family day and on graduation day.

I graduated along time ago. They had asked us who we have coming. Because the seating can be limited - Indoor graduation due to inclement weather. I would get on the Parris Island NOT- Paradise Island - website and find out about the area and the graduation. As far as what to do the base is not that big and there really is not a whole lot out in town. You could travel to Hiltonhead which is very expensive. I guess it all depend on how long you plan on staying down there.
I did graduate along time ago but I still can remember it as if it were yesterday. It is definitely worth it. The pride, the joy of seeing your Marine. There is nothing like it.

Parris Isand is a short diatance from Hilton Head South Carolina which is a major recreational resort area. It's also next door to historic Beaufort South Carolina. About 70 miles north is Charleston, South Carolina and the site of Fort Sumter where the Civil War began. 35 miles south is the city of Savannah Georgia, another historic place. Link below is for tourist information.

I believe you are going to Parris Island, South Carolina.
I graduated from there, and although it's an honor, none of my family came for the graduation. I must say not many family members of the other recruits were there, either. If your family wants to be there, that's great. I'm afraid I didn't get to see much of the surrounding area because we were in training for what seemed like all the time. You might check out some websites to see what that area has to offer.

If it were MCRD, San Diego, I could be more encouraging in recommending a family visit, unless you want to continue your journey south to Disney World.
Parris Island is not exactly the garden capitol of the world. Well maybe for S. Carolina it is, but you might want to latch on to a S.Carolina travel guide so you can plan out an itinerary. Otherwise, those kids will be bored to tears.
