I want to become an officer in the Marine Corps, but I also want to be a "hands on" leader, and be able to go where my marines go. Is becoming an officer a bad choice? I've heard that lieutenants are most often platoon leaders...does that mean i'll be with my marines in the field? What about Captains?

As a Lt in a combat arms field you will most likely have a plt for a short while. You will not be as close to your men as the plt sgt or the other nco's. That just isn't your job. By the time you pick up 1st Lt you might become company XO or move on. From there on you will have commands, but you will not be close to your Marines.

Captains, 1st lieutenants, 2nd lieutenants, are all company grade officers. Captains are normally company commanders whereas 1st and 2nd lieutenants are platoon leaders, as are senior NCO's.

Platoon leaders are often in the field with their platoons and get killed or wounded, just as easily as the grunts, but not in the numbers that grunts get killed.

So, if it's exposure to combat you crave, this is the proper path.

Marine officers are usually the top 10% of the Navy grads. Just because you want this, doesn't mean you can get it. I've heard that there are no non-combatents in the Marine Corps. Non-combatent posts are held by the Navy personel.

Yes and yes. Lieutenants and Captains are in the field with the troops. Major and above do not usually maneuver with the troops unless an entire battalion is engaged.

Lieutenants are usually the first to get blown away because they know too much (or so they think) and become a victim of their own knowledge (or lack thereof), in answer to your question, they do go into combat. Any officer worth his salt goes everywhere with his/her men/women.
