A man told me that religion is the disease of humanity. I think that bad religious thinking mixed with violence is the disease. What about all the good that has come from true faith and all the good deeds ?

Religion is like a lot of things - it can be used for good or it can be exploited by evil people to cause evil. Just because some people twist the words of the Bible or Koran to create evil doesn't mean that God is evil or that all religion is evil. Cars kill people, so do airplanes and sometimes even medicine - doesn't mean we're going to stop using those.

Every great monolithic structure, every charity, the first institutions for higher learning, the first great thinkers, the exploration of the globe, every invention of the classical and medieval periods, cultural diets, customs of countless nations, the dress code the world over, and fundamentals for competitive sport were all the result of someone trying to please some god. The fact that secular politicians use religion for their various agendas has little to do with faith in God, the gods, or spirituality in general. And the assumption that POLITICAL strife is caused by anything but mankind is absurd.

P.S. The last time I went to church the pastor wasn't telling me to join the army or burn down a mosque. Idiots tell me that.

Any faith, religion, or lack of it is only as good or as bad as the people that form that group. have Christan's made mistakes? you bet ? Are we all to be feared and not to be trusted. NO! There is good and bad in all groups and all religion's and beliefs. Telling some one they have to believe a certain way and killing or torturing them for not doing that is the disease.

i believe that the man was referring to religions' unaccepting stance toward other ways of life. in that sense religion has far outweighed it's good. it is due to religion that the human race had 0 scientific progress for 400 years because science was evil. the inquisitions in Europe even the WW2 holocaust can be pinned to religion. the biggest of our modern day problems root themselves in religious ideology.

Most of the bad is perpetrated by a minority who appeal to the masses. The essence of religion is beautiful but humans have corrupted it. perhaps a better question would be: Is humanity the disease of religion? but then again, religion is perpetuated by humans and therefore would not exist if humans did not exist...

Misunderstanding religion's purpose is just as destructive as clinging to the outer form rather than the inner light. Understood correctly, the purpose of religion is to bring happiness and prosperity to all. Religion has two parts: the inner eternal reality and the outward social form. The inner eternal reality is the light; the outward social form is the lamp. From age to age, the inner reality is renewed while the outer from is replaced to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. When we cling to the lamp and not the light, we become harmful and religion becomes harmful. Consequently, it is very important that we recognize when a new universal educator appears with new knowledge to carry forward individuals and society.

Marx said, 'religion is the opium of the people', the man was just modernizing an old theory of communism.
Negative travels faster and always lingers longer no matter how you want to input positive.

We just see so much bad from religion... unfortunately.

As an atheist, I feel that so much of religion, even if it looks ok, is still based on a lie. People can do good with or without religion, I think.

--I AGREE WITH YOU!
--WITHOUT the marvelous religious example that Christ set , what would we have besides hypocrisy unexposed?
---WHEN WE have that example as the true model, there is no excuse for not to keep trying in our imperfection to be like him:
***(1 Peter 2:21) “. . .In fact, to this [course] YOU were called, because even Christ suffered for YOU, leaving YOU a model for YOU to follow his steps closely.”
--WITH HIS TEACHINGS and example one can definetly realize that their is indeed A True Christianity, even the world recognizes it, amidst the false:
*** gt The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived ***
--The historian H.G WELLS (my caps) said that a man’s greatness can be measured by ‘what he leaves to grow, and whether he started others to think along fresh lines with a vigor that persisted after him.’ Wells, although not claiming to be a Christian, acknowledged: “By this test Jesus stands first".......
--The respected historian WILL DURANT (my caps) argued: “That a few simple men should in one generation have invented so powerful and appealing a personality, so lofty an ethic and so inspiring a vision of human brotherhood, would be a miracle far more incredible than any recorded in the Gospels."...........
--Yet, some may object: ‘Look at all the crimes that have been committed in the name of Christ—the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the wars that have seen millions who claim to be Christian kill one another on opposing battle lines.’ But the truth is, these people belie their claim to be followers of Jesus. His teachings and way of life condemn their actions. Even a Hindu, MOHANDIS GANDHI, was moved to say: ‘I love Christ, but I despise Christians because they do not live as Christ lived.’
--A REFERENCE of the restoring of true worship , was foretold in the person of the Christ and those who truly followed him:
***(Malachi 3:17-18) “. . .“And they will certainly become mine,” Jehovah of armies has said, “at the day when I am producing a special property. And I will show compassion upon them, just as a man shows compassion upon his son who is serving him. 18 And YOU people will again certainly see [the distinction] between a righteous one and a wicked one, between one serving God and one who has not served him.””
--AND THE HYPOCRISY of those claiming true Christianity in Paul's and our time has indeed been foretold:(THIS DIRECTLY applies to so-called christians)
***(2 Timothy 3:1-5) “3 But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away......13 But wicked men and impostors will advance from bad to worse, misleading and being misled"

Good Question!
