The best way to remove calculus or tarter is to have it professionally taken off. Sounds like you haven't had a dental cleaning in a while, so may want to schedule one.

You can't simply whiten it. If you ignore it, it will build up and you could have major problems in the long-run.

Best of luck.

Try using tartar control toothpaste. They have an ingredient that actually helps minimize the build up of tartar. Flossing also helps to prevent more tartar from building in between your teeth. Once you build up tartar you can't brush it off but you can try to prevent more from forming in those areas.
Electric toothbrush is a great idea to help reduce plaque and tartar in hard-to-reach areas.
As far as teeth whitening, I heard Crest whitestripes are great.

If it is just starting, you should be using tartar control toothpaste and brushing frequently and also using a water pic.

If you can afford gold caps get them gold does not allow plaque to build on it so you will never have receding gums or gingivitis causing bone loss and eventually tooth loss. I have had several molers caped with gold and those teeth are as solid as when I was a teenager. I love the gold crown molers and had no problems with them in 35 years. It was the best investment I made with my dentist. Listerine has a mouth rinse whitener and ultra brite tooth paste has titanium dioxcide in it that embed itself to the enamel that make your teeth appear whiter. Talk to your dentist about the gold caps and he will tell you that it is an investment you will appreciate for many years. I only hand my molers done in gold and left my incisors (front teeth) natural and I tell you I am so glad I did it.

A cheap and natural tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries but certain precautions have to be taken. I found the information at http://www.aches.in/toothwhitening.html
