Get a sheltie!!! (your neighbors will appreciate this over a Chihuahua)

The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please and obey. Shelties are loving, loyal, and affectionate with their family, but are naturally aloof with strangers and might not appreciate being petted by someone they do not know; for this reason Shelties must be socialized extensively. Some can be quite reserved and some have varying degrees of shyness. Although they are excellent family pets, Shelties do especially well with children if they are raised with them from an early age; however, their small size makes it easy for a child to accidentally injure them, so supervision is necessary. Exercise caution when considering an adult Sheltie for a family with young children, they may not be compatible.

You at least are smart enough to know that the breed MUST fit the owners lifestyle. Why not search the web for a group or club that enjoys and is knowlegable about these breeds and talk to them. They will be of great help in determining which ones personalities fit yours. Try Chihuahua or Sheltie rescue groups and even adopt one from them. They WANT to find a good home for these dogs and the person that is " fostering " the dog has already learned the dogs personality and can tell you all about it.Try searching Sheltie rescue followed by your home town and I bet there is one located near you.

I absolutely love shelties! They are beautiful dogs and they usually have a good personality. They are also very easy to train because of how intelligent they are. The only thing that worries me about a sheltie is that the herding instinct makes them want to chase cars when they're outside so if you do get one, make sure he/she is on a leash. If you want the dog to stay outside, if you don't have a fence I would suggest you get one (one that they can't climb through or over). I think I would go with the sheltie. Good luck with your new puppy!

It depends if you want a small fragile dog or a bigger furry dog that needs a lot of exercise.
All breeds can bark a lot. You have to train the dog not to.
I can't tell you what to get, you have to know how much time you want to spend exercising the dog and grooming it.
Shelties need to be brushed a lot, or their undercoat will mat up.
Chihuahuas don't need much brushing at all, but their nails usually grow really long, as their weight isn't enough to really wear the nails down.
You can find both breeds at the shelter or on www.petfinder.com
There are usually more chihuahuas though.

Well, they don't get much different that that!

Have you thought about what you want in a dog? What you're willing to deal with as far as shedding, exercise requirements, etc? Feeding and grooming expenses? What kinds of activities you want to do with the dog?

A sheltie is a high-energy dog that needs A LOT of mental and physical stimulation or they will quickly become destructive. They shed, and they will need grooming, and they will eat much more than a little Chi. They are also prone quite a few genetic diseases, so be prepared to search out an extremely responsible breeder.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from a Sheltie, just trying to illustrate my point. Sometimes, it's NOT best to get a dog breed because it's your "favorite." It makes much more sense, and will ultimately make you happier, to get one that really fits your means and lifestyle. So many people get dogs just because they've "always wanted a lab" or "always wanted a doberman," only to find that the dog really isn't right for them at all.

Before making your decision, I urge you to DO YOUR RESEARCH! Find out EVERYTHING about the breeds you''re considering and make an informed decision. Not based on a bunch of strangers' opinions, but on your own knowledge of the breed and your lifestyle. You, and the dog, will be MUCH happier if you do.

you really need to study on both breed tehy aer totally opposites and you cn't go by the looks.
a chihuahau isknow as a one person dog and will pick it's owner and that might not be you.
They are small and are fragile
when not socialized and trained correctly can become vrey mean and yappy I have several and they are sweet hearts but prefer to be with me and they let you know it. tehy are only allowed to bark if someone's at teh door but once told it's ok they are quiet.
Shetlies require a lot of bruching and grooming.
they can be very hyper and need a lot of excercise to prevent them from being destuctive most are also natural herders and will try to herd anything including cars and often will get hit so need the correct training
I have also had and have found obedience training is a great help.
I love both breeds and not knowing you can't actually say which would be best for you
Also realize that you are comitting to at least 12 or more years so consider school, activities and college ( depending on your age)

Chihahuas and Shelties are very different in personality. Please do alot of research before you choose. It really depends on what you want in a dog.

I don't know much about Chihuahas but shelties are a herding breed. They bark ALOT. They need alot of excercise and if they don't get it, they will be very unhappy and may start showing some bad behaviors. However, this will not be the dog's fault, but YOURS. Whatever dog you get, it is YOUR responsiblity to provide its needs. So if they need lots of exercise, you better give it to them or you will be a BAD owner.

Again, don't get a dog just b/c you like the look. READ about them before you get one.

Shelties are beautiful and most have great personalities.
Chihuahuas are cute, but harder to treat if ill and many have iffy personalities, but still adorable to their families.

YOU must be the one to decide what to do. but please go to a shelter first and see if there is a Sheltie or Ch that just falls in love with you and has to own you immediately. It will adore you forever for saving it's little life!
Best wishes.

i definately agree with dragonfly. dogs in shelters and pounds have lots to offer and love bunches when you save them. i know-that's what i did and i don't regret it one little bit. the dog i saved is also a purebred dachshund. you can find lots of purebreds in shelters, especially chihuahuas. if you don't want to do that, then i'd get a sheltie. they are great little dogs and most have good personalities.
